Open letter

that last story just reminded me of something that happenned a little over a week ago. I went with a couple of buddies to a piece of public land for a late muzzy hunt. Their were no other vehicles around when we pulled up so we made our plan and headed out.We werent out all that long before we start hearing gunshots. We start walking that direction to find a couple of guys and a couple of kids target shooting. If it werent for the kids Id of stopped for a chat, but I decided to let it go. When we got back to the pickup, I saw they had parked right next to us, the real strange part was they had Minnesota tags

, I would sure think they could find someplace closer to home to shoot target!

I think this post could go on and on , but I have a story from the other day.

As usual when I want to hunt someplace I ask permission and I did when I saw a spot where there were deer coming out to feed in a corn field a few days earlier. I stopped at the guys house and asked him if he owned the draw behind his house which he said he did and said I could hunt it. I asked him if he knew who owned the field the deer were feeding in and he told me his son did and that it would be ok for me to hunt there too.
I went back there a couple days later and parked on the highway and walked down the field to a dike on the pond where I could hide and shoot the area the deer were coming out in. I saw one decent buck but it was real late so I passed on him, besides it was early in the late season. When I got back to my truck I found it tagged with wide orange surveyor tape and wondered why it would be tagged when it was only there for a little over an hour. I knew that a Trooper had to have done it because the guys on the Sheriff's Dept. all know my truck. I took the tape off and went home figuring it was a mistake. I went back a few nights later to hunt there again only this time I sat in the edge of the timber. I had no more set down and I hear a bunch of shooting up by my truck, this time I had driven my old Ranger instead of my work truck. Well there was absolutely no reason for any shooting up there on the highway but I still chalked it up to some idiot shooting 400 yards away the last 1/2 hr. of the day. Needless to say I never saw a damn deer that night. Well a couple days later my boss calls me and says that this guys wife called and said I was hunting there without permission. She said she had RUN my plates and found it was a work vehicle from where I work.

Now this really pissed me off not only because I had permission but it's illegal for anyone to run your plates unless your a cop as far as I know. I put it all together then what all the shooting was about by my truck, it was his damn son being a jerk trying to scare everything away, which he did. I still haven't talked to her or him but it is going to happen and I don't really care if I don't hunt there again. I'm sure it has been spread around already that I was trespassing so I have nothing to lose by having my say in the matter.

Hey man i know exactly how you feel. We hunt right beside public ground and hate it. But since we have cought so many tresspassers on our ground so many times the game warden is gonna make sure its not gonna be used for hunting. A couple years ago when the public ground was dry people would bring their BIG 4x4 trucks out their and tear everything up. It sucked for them when they got stuck we would call the cops because they wernt suppost to be out their. They never came back after that. But i had a incident just like you before. Except they were riding Quads. Those things are LOUD. They were racing through our ground and got to the river. Lucky they didnt get close enough or they would have gotten their ass kicked!!!!!

And my dad works at a Sand pit, They get some many people tresspassing on that ground its not even funny. My dad tried to stop one before and almost gotten ran over. Wheew i never wanna see my dad that pissed ever again.

Good luck!!!

as we lose land access all over the state, more and more tresspassing "slob" hunter will be "born"

I would agree with that, less access = more frustration. Sad but true.

I have to say something about your thoughts on ATV's I know that you are right in most cases but I have to say it's not true in all.
If it wasn't for my ATV I wouldn't be able to hunt at all!! In 2000 I damaged my back severing nerves that control he motor movement in my right leg below the knee. My right leg has no movement below the knee and I have limited use of my entire right leg. I don't have the lux. of being able to walk the mile to my stand. I used to walk more than a mile to get to some great hunting places in NE Iowa; places that I now can't hunt as they are deep in a very large timber. I know your frustration w/ the ATV's. But they all aren't bad people that ride them.
I now park about 50-100 yrds from my stand, walk (hobble) w/ a walking stick to it. Do I like this NO WAY but a least I still try to hunt I rarely see monster bucks anymore & I know the the ATV is prob. the reason but I have no choice if I want to continue to hunt at all.

I am not trying to stick up for the slob asses out their; as there are plenty; just wanted to point out that all aren't.

It’s the same as I keep saying about the thieves...Take their hunting privileges away for a couple years and it will make them think twice!! That and take their gun/bow and truck too!!!

[/ QUOTE ] First off sorry to hear about the back, I hear where your coming from but your not really the normal rider. I'm glad you still have a way to hunt with the use of the ATV and hope someday a deaf and blind booner comes your way.

Makes you think of the Medieval English peasants (think resident hunters that don't have the resources to buy large tracts of land), that were often executed for "poaching" the King's deer, all because they were hungry and had a family to feed... I know it's an asinine comparison, but that's how I feel...

I DO NOT trespass, and I DO NOT poach deer, but I can see where the future of our sport is heading, and it's a GRIM outlook

Unfortunately, I agree with you completely. Just take a look at South Dakota, many residents are left with the road ditches for hunting (legal there I believe)...
