chokepoint

I checked a rub cluster Sunday and saw some fresh rubs. This is a traditional rub site, one of the few I have found after lots of scouting. Deer populations here are low, less than 7 per sq mile so rubs are not common. Two years ago, I saw a buck on these rubs that had 26+ beams and 12-14 back tines. It was shot 2 weeks after I saw him and I measured him. That buck was rubbing 8" trees in the same cluster. This year and last the rubs are less pronounced. However, there was a 6" tree there with 5 ft high scratch marks. It was very strange since the scratches are fairly evenly spaced and could pass for claw marks. I saw a bear track on the way in but I am not convinced it is bear because the scratches run from a foot to 5+ feet high. A bear would not scratch so low. The scratches were vertical. It is too bad my camera is not working or I would post pics.
What do you think ? Is this a buck? Has anyone seen anything like it? How high would his rack have to be to reach well over 5 feet? How high is a northern bucks head off the ground? I tried to find deer dimensions on the web with no luck.
