I was starting to climb out of the stand at 9:30 this morning. I had arrowed a doe at 8:45 and figured I'd given her enough time. As I was packing, I heard noises behind me. I slowly turned to look and saw a deer headed my way, 40 yards and closing. I had another doe tag, so figured I might fill it.
A second glance at the deer and I saw spikes. I wasn't interested in filling an antlerless tag with a spike, but then I noticed that this spike was still in velvet. Things immediately switched to "game on" but I was unfortunately busted as I drew at 5 yards. The deer bolted to a windfall and did not offer a shot.
I was left wondering if it was a male who's jewels weren't properly functioning or whether it was a doe who will continue to grow a freak rack. The world may never know.....
