OPPOSITE OF IOWA - MICHIGAN - baiting legalized!

How does the one buck tag work in Kansas? Do residents just pick one season ? Or does everyone get to hunt bow plus one other season? Or just a governors tag where you hunt any season you want until you’re tagged out ?
You can hunt any season with legal weapon until you harvest your buck. Starts with early muzzle loader, then archery and then gun in early December and back to archery until December 31.

You can hunt archery the entire time even during muzzle loader and regular firearms season.

However, there are NO Big deer in Kansas!! Iowa has that market cornered!!!

Elvis nailed that. He misspoke though… KS has way more big bucks than iowa!!! ;). Plus…. If you own 80 acres or more you can get a guaranteed tag as a NRLO.
KS is a mixed bag….
I personally think KS is insane for doing that. It’s throwing Residents out of the sport by the truck load every year + segmentation of land into 80’s! ONE BUCK on the other hand is brilliant!!!!! Corn piles littering the land scape …. insanity!!! Late gun season… amazing. It’s wild how one state can get so many things right & wrong at the same time. KS bottom line: it’s the 2nd best run state in the country. With MAJOR flaws!!! But that demonstrates how bad so many others are managed.
Its main downfall that COULD be its end: the resource is FOR SALE. They are always trying these stupid things like “every land owner gets tags to sell to highest bidder” - to their credit - some of those foolish things do get reversed. I’ve seen it really struggle in 25 years. 20 more years of sectioning up 80’s so you get guaranteed tags & continuing to bomb the landscape with corn piles…. Gonna keep hurting it. It’s gone downhill in last 10-20 years- much like iowa. Probably worse in east 1/3rd of state. I’m very concerned what will come of ks. & that’s with 1 buck. But heck, we still have debate here where folks panic if we dial back 3+ buck tags per person (2 acres for a landowner which is insane IMHO) + party buck tags (unlimited if u find people that get tags) & an urban buck. 1 buck is great In KS & easy to solve the “management buck” issue by having youth hunters or guests hunt those bucks. Even as a NRLO of KS we can find 20 people willing to shoot a management buck for every buck we’d like to shoot. Residents are glad to shoot them as they have lost so much access

You won’t find another guy that wants to see fewer bucks shot than me. I just have a hard time wrapping my head around guys having 40+ days of gun and muzzleloader hunting. I think it should be a one buck version of what we have now. A governors tag version doesn’t seem like it would reduce buck harvest, just increase the number of guys in the field on opening day of gun season. Would be really interesting to see the stats of Kansas vs Iowa , hunters, harvest % , record book entries, deer population, etc.

Agree.
The one GENIUS thing iowa did… you CHOOSE what gun season u want to hunt. BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!! Every other state - the ARMY comes out all at once. Chaos in many cases. Crowds, access issues, pressure to the extreme. Having early ML, gun 1 & 2 & late ML…. Gives hunters a choice of the 4. Spreads hunters & pressure out!!
I’ve been through gazillion gun seasons in lots of states. Many - the hunting is kinda shot after “the big opener” - few days in- ruined for the year. Iowa- totally different…. Gun 2, still good. Late ML til the last day- excellent. We have quality hunting for all 4 months.
The way to thread the needle…. If down the road it came to it (& in my personal opinion- we get deer populations up & see if solves a lot of the issues)…. If quality did indeed continue to nose dive… we reduce a buck tag & still work in “you pick your season”. Hypothetically, let’s say it was “1 buck tag” …. U get your archery tag & if u do a gun, you pick the gun season the SAME AS NOW!!! I honestly hope we can rebound & guys say “iowa is in excellent shape, no changes needed”. But - if things do decline long term- we all have to be willing to make changes based on current biology & opportunities…. Same with an ehd outbreak or “no deer in western iowa” …. A properly done, well run dnr adapts regulations for the current conditions. We have, for 30 years, only gone one direction…. More weapons, seasons, quotas & technologies. Our chance to right this ship is with recovering deer #’s in areas hurting badly.
