fellow archery hunters:

I'm avid out of state bowhunter looking
for any advise on planning an iowa whitetail bowhunt. I've never hunter your great state, but heard great reviews. I'm looking for some advise on what unit/area might be good to apply for. I appreciate your help. thankyou.

Don't forget about how bad the mesquitos and rattle snakes were this year. With all the waterfowl around, probably a case or two of Asian Bird Flu

Wow fellas... way to support your own state! Iowa bowhunting is good if you find the rite spots at the rite times! I really dont have a specific area to request for u tomb.. but any area in Iowa seems good to me! You will more than likely see deer in places you wouldnt expect too!! so i would go anywhere here! good luck with your choice!

Deer unting in Iowa is good, we have lots of public land and many good outfitters also. If you are a little more specific about what you are looking for I'm sure you'll get some help. Might I suggest western Iowa, nothing but little does here on the east side, and not very many of them!

Only like three and half doe-ettes in Muscatine and Louisa counties combined!! Sad, Sad area!

No offense tomb, but that's kinda like asking to borrow a guy's wife for the weekend.

The northeast corner and the southern third of the state are best for big bucks along with the Loess hills area of Western Iowa. There are a few other pockets too, if you can find them. Let's just say that the poorest areas of Iowa are still better than the best areas in PA. It is tough to get ground to hunt in the good areas so I would suggest going with an outfitter.

Do your homework, there are plenty of ways to find out the best counties by searching records, etc. Most of the people here are friendly, and the guys on this site have a good sense of humor as you have seen, but you aren't going to get a lot of detailed info on a public forum. Good luck with your hunt.

Your question is plenty broad enough to be reasonable IMO. I would do some research on the Iowa DNR website looking toward public ground. I personally would never pay for an outfitter. Frankly, coming from PA you really don't need one as you will be quit pleased with the quality of animals you will find anywhere in IA. If you want a fair chance at drawing in the next two years I would avoid SE and NE Iowa. These areas are for the most part a 1 in every 3 year draw for bowhunters at this time.

Okay.. i just checked this forum out again!.. and u say southeast iowa isnt a place u would recommend to go! thats a big negative! haha im sry but do a lot of scouting and preseason stuff.. and ull find ur deer! ive seen about 30 shooters this year all different bucks too! and they we just never in range for my bow! then i tried a public area in the last weekend of bow season and i ended up getting a beautiful 9 pt. buck! Its all about the places the hunt and the patients you have!! Southeast iowa is pretty low on deer i would say also.. but find the rite places and ull find the pot of gold!!

Check out zone1. NW Iowa,Best kept secret in Iowa.Plenty of public hunting
and can get some private hunting ground with some door knocking. Also better chance in drawing tag! You would even be in the loess hills!! The North end!
PM me and i will tell you what i know
about area.
