Hate to change the subject of the Tag price Increase. How can people who are so worried about having all their big bucks killed by non-residents allow such a stupid thing as party hunting(DA)Several years back there was a article in North American Whitetail about a lady killing 3!!!(THREE) really nice bucks in the same day. that was okey because her dad & husband had tags. (DA)

Don't think for a minute that it is supported by all residents. It is one of the few things that this state is doing wrong in it's deer management. IMO of course.

Hey JJ6...I think I know the lady you are talking about killing the 3 bucks..I beleive you are refering about Elisha Hugen..Which we have all talked about with her world class 8 point, then shot a 140 inch 9 pointer while the guys went and got the truck. And then she proceeded to shoot one more. I guess If you kinda of look at party hunting, if one person shoots 3, but there are 3 tags, how could it be different than if each person shot one of them. What I am saying is that the party hunters are willing to tag others deer if the chance comes, and in all reality, the deer would probably end up dead. So its kind of a toss up....not trying to shake things up, just trying to get my 2 cents in the bucket...hopefully I dont piss anyone off.

It's only no different if that same deer was going to run by all 3 hunters who have the same shooting ability. The difference lies in the fact that some folks get a tag for their daughter, mother, grandma, dog, tractor, and imaginary friend, and then proceed to fill those tags for folks who don't hunt in the first place. I would be curious to see how many other states allow this kind of hunting. Flugge...I don't think your statement would make anyone mad. It is just a flawed system that has been abused for years, much like the landowner tags. There is a reason they don't allow party hunting in the muzzleloader and bow season. The other thing I don't like about it is you hear so many stories about he 37 guys who went out in 1st shotgun season and killed 37 deer in a day and a half. 25 of them were bucks and 30 of the people only hunted for a day and a half that year. They put the die hard good shots on posts and the weekend warriers walk around and chase the deer until everybody's tags are filled. Then they all get off on going around for weeks and telling everyone about the slaughter they were part of.

Silvertip hit the nail with his head.

The extra tags that alot of people get is a big problem the state won't look at for $$$ reason's I spose. It's of course illeagal to have another persons tag in your posession but with every other person carrying cell phones these days that extra tag is only a few minutes away......

I also know alot of party hunters throw every shell they have plus the gun at deer, wound them and don't look for it if they didn't drop it on the spot. I relize that this isn't associated with just party hunting but it happens more frequently because of the long, running shots these hunters take.

I heard a group of 6 guys take 28 shots at 2 deer about 200 yards from my house one morning and walk out with 1 of them, it sounded like world war 3 blew open in my back yard. I agree about the whole slaughter thing as well.

I have never party hunted because my dad did it when he was my age and he would never let me because of the fact that he was laying on the ground one day with slugs hitting the trees around him. I don't think it's one of the safest ways to hunt.

We do the party hunting thing, we've never had a slaughter. Every year, 1 guy in our group has gotten two bucks at the same time, running with each other. What's wrong with that? as long as you have tags, you may as well fill them. Party hunting is a great idea and i think has been abused by a few which has given it a bad name. I completely agree that some people are not using it in the way intended. However, I'm not in favor of abolishing it.

The other one might have survived!!I have been coming up there quite a few years shed hunting and i have always found several bucks and does that were not recovered.I am sure this happens everywhere but i would say more so from groups just letting fly at everything that passes by.I just think it a bad law i am surprised Mo. doesn,t have it. JJ6from Mo.

I know there are a few groups of hunters around here that are also party hunting during Muzzleloader season. But I do see your point on where you are coming from on it, with people buying the extra tags for people who arent there, that just pisses people off. I think thats something that should really get addressed. Not the whole issue of party hunting. I know of a kid who got 3 land owner tags, 2 other tags, and then also a resident in another state. And the kid was renting an apartment where he was at college, so its just a screwed up system. I am done and hopefully didnt piss anyone off. If anyone wants to know more of my explaining, pm me..Later

I agree w/ ya M Shooter.
When I hunted w/ a party, most of our deer that we shot during 2nd season were antlerless. Out of about 20 deer, maybe 3 per season had antlers. We hunted for meat. We always tracked our deer if needed & found them 99% of the time. We had tags for all that were there to hunt.
It can't be all that bad to have parties hunting like this. The push to kill antlerless deer has been huge the last couple of years. Our group didn't need a push...we were already doing it.

No question party hunting and landowner tags are the most abused laws we have.I'm not talking about most of the folks on this site,if you spend much time here you are a deer hunting addiction. The people I'm referring to are the folks who pick up a gun or buy slugs the night before the season(the same ones who complain about too many deer and then go out and shoot 15 year and half old bucks and 2 does). The landowner tags was addressed this year but the party hunting is pretty much entrenched. You would have more luck getting rid of baiting and feeders in Tx than get rid of party hunting in Ia.

This came from the FORMER DNR director,I'll never forget this one.You bowhunters should quit whining and crying about party hunting, if you want 60 day season and no gun hunting in the rut you have to give up something. No matter that it is abused, just suck it up and be glad the gun hunters aren't in the rut. That was one of the first meetings I sat in on with the DNR. Couldn't believe what I was hearing.

There is something about party hunting that I will always remember, it's not the bullets whizzing by or some guys shooting dinks. It's the fun I had hunting with 15-20 guys. It was a blast, even though I don't do it much anymore, I can see why people love it, it is a good time to get out with your buddies. I don't like the idea of someone tagging my deer, that's why I got out of it. Call me greedy but nobody is filling my buck tag except me. To deny these guys the right to party hunt seems absurd to me. That's almost like telling me that I can't bowhunt out of a treestand. It seems ridiculous. Guys are out there having fun and hunting the way they want to, just like me. Party hunting has been around for as long as I can remember, and the last I heard everyone wants to hunt Iowa

Obviously, party hunting is not hurting us.

I don't think party hunting in general is the problem. Here in Pennsylvania it's common to see between 8 and 15 guys doing deer drives after the first day to get the deer moving, but you have to use YOUR tag. The camaraderie and experience is still there.
The issue I have, and others have, is the fact that another person can give you an any sex tag.
With all the NR issues discussed on this board lately I'm shocked that very few mentioned this huge loophole. Many NR's buy a doe tag, after being denied an any sex tag, come to IA and shoot a buck. I think it's absurd.

This topic comes up at least 3 - 4 times a year. My family has been party hunting for longer than I have been around. For most of them it is a way to get out, enjoy the outdoors and have fun. It isn't about shooting a monster buck. That would just be a bonus. I use the bow season to look for a nice deer and I party hunt with my family to have fun and hopefully clean out some does for sausage. Do we injur some and not find them, yes, who hasn't? Do we like that? No. We try really hard to find the ones that we hit. It just doesn't always work out. Not all party hunters are that bad. Besides, hunting second season can be a little harder by yourself. After a week of being chased those deer are jumpy. We have probably all had bad experiences with party hunting, but I have had bad experiences with turkey hunters setting up within 100 yards of my decoys in the spring and crappie fishermen pushing their way right into my favorite spot with me sitting there. It depends on the people. To me this is the same as someone using dogs to hunt mountain lions or baiting bears, if you don't like those methods, don't do them.

Maybe i should have said it this way Party Tagging. Almost every body hunts with a bunch of people deer drives are a part of deer hunting(but it is not for me personal opinion)I just don,t think that one person should be allowed to fill the dags of other people.

Woo Hoo!!! One more thing to pit hunters against hunters!!! Party hunting's unethical, modern muzzle loaders are unethical, compound bows are to fast and quiet, everyone should wear blaze orange and a strobe light. Aren't we all supposed to be on the same side? Us against the anti's????

I retract my previous post, and I am joining Loess! We should be on the same side. Hunt the way you want, just do it ethically and safe.

not much sense in even arguing this. its the law of the land, and the majority of hunters in the state are in support of it. as long as its done within the laws, there is nothing wrong with it

How would you guys feel if I were to purchase a doe tag yet shoot one of your monster bucks legally?
