Persuasive Speech

Hey guys I am in a speech class and have to give a 8 min. persuasive speech about something I am passionate about. I was thinking on doing it on something in the lines of hunting support or property leasing. Do any of you have any ideas for me?

Here are just a few ideas for you.

You could give your persuasive speech over why you should join a wildlife conservation agency, such as pheasants forever, the NWTF, whitetails unlimited, the IBA, etc. You could talk about all of the positive things these groups do...and try to persuade your listeners why they should become a member of one of these organizations.

You could persuade people to give hunting a try. Talk about all of the positives of being a hunter. For instance, good hobby, brings in money for the state and local businesses, family past time, exercise, challenging yet rewarding, learn life long lessons, etc. etc.

Good luck on your speech and let us know how it goes! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

I did a persuasive speech on trapping...My aim was to discount my PETA supporting TA and all the animal rights freaks in my class. I made them see things from a whole new perspective.

Anything to promote the support of the outdoors is a great starting point, because I assume you're like most of us and it is your passion. Search for something that you feel very strongly about (like REAP, CRP, or something along those lines) and run with it. There is so much background to those programs and the future for them all is kind of up in the air.

You could even bring in the whole Ethanol thing, and how some people are wanting to use Switchgrass or CRP grasses for Ethanol...and for me using CRP is the dumbest idea I've ever heard. CRP is for the benefit of the wildlife, and then they want to mow down all the phesants winter cover. Seems ridiculous to me.

At any rate, maybe you see my point on how to incorporate a bunch of ideas into on main theme.

Research several angles and provide details (consistent with your intended purpose) and make it fun. You'll do fine.

Good Idea

Here's a good one: PERSUADE EVERYONE TO VOTE FOR MCCAIN! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

I took a speech class in college and I did a persuasive speech on "why everyone should hunt" I even took my 185" shoulder mount and an "antler trap" to use as props.. It went very well and I got an "A". Good props are key. Good luck to you! Def. do something that you will enjoy talking about!

Give an 8 min speech on how the class is a waste of time for you in the fall, and that your prof should excuse you for the reminder of the semester while still giving you an acceptable grade!

That is something I think you could be passionate about.

I would tell you to pick your own topic of interest but try to keep the speech focused on that topic, rather than trying to make it really broad and general. You could talk about the negative impact leasing and outfitters are having on Iowa deer hunting. There are all kinds of topics like hunter recruitment, hunter safety, public hunting access, or my own personal favorite over harvest and our declining deer population. I don't know what level or where the class is but I probably would not try to persuade some one to try deer hunting specifically for the first hunting experience. Too many people look at deer as either vermin that eat corn and just run in front of cars, or as Bambi who talks to rabbits and skunks. If you are a pheasant hunter, that might be a good subject with lots of visuals and excitement you can use. One thing I learned in a persuasion class years ago, don't use a confrontational in your face style. You need to be very subtle and present both sides of an issue with the predominance of information on your side of choice and let your audience draw their own conclusions (the one you lead them to). Good luck and spread the word, Hunting is a good thing.

Andy,
I think you must of talked your Prof. into that didn't you?

I bet the class was Animal Identification Skills 101? /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/sleep.gif

I remember doing one on making pizza(of course not a persuasive one). I worked at the Hut at the time and then I brought in pizza for everyone....got an A!

I don't remember what my persuasive one was, so it must not have been real interesting to me.

Hunting vs. antis seems like a good idea. Perhaps approach from the standpoint of managment practices to sustain and improve populations, revenue advantages, getting youth outdoors, working with ag community to reduce damage, etc. Contrast with groups like PETA and others and their efforts to thwart the process. Be sure to cite specific examples of ethics and legal violations they perform on a regular basis to advance their radical agenda. Bowmaker made a very intelligent point though, avoid the in your face "us vs. them" style. Citing facts and real examples will likely be all it takes to turn people sour toward antis and their tactics and they'll choose their side THEMSELVES rather than you telling them which side to choose. You'll just provide the info to make it an obvious choice. If you're allowed to use slides, get some pics of the antis in their finest hour...throwing paint on people with furs etc. A pics worth a thousand words.

I gave a persuasive speech at Kirkwood arguing that bigfoot was real. You can find all kinds of information on bigfoot on the internet. Got a good grade on it too!

But I do like the idea of persuading the audience on the benefits of joining an outdoor/wildlife supporting organization. We can never have enough support for the sport we love. Good luck!
