I live in East Central Iowa and we had a ton of pheasants in the fall of 2007 and for a few years before that. I could honestly have the opportunity to limit out every time I went out. I believe the winter of 2007-2008 was way too hard on them and then the floods last summer washed away what few nests there were. That winter was hard on everything. I found over 100 dead deer shed hunting last spring.
But in my opinion these predatory birds are getting out of control. I was working up a field last week and counted 27 red tailed hawks. When we pick corn I don't know how many times I have seen red tailed hawks sitting on a post at the end of the field waiting for the combine to flush the birds out and then it will grab one when they are flying out of the corn. IMO they need to open a season on red-tailed hawks because they are destroying our pheasant population. They don't have any predators that I know of?.?.?.? And their numbers are getting really high..
