This past weekend we had met with some of the farmers who were working our land. They told us about 2 bucks they had found in early Oct. We immediately thought poaching, hunters, or maybe car accident. They gave us the two bucks and the one was a 140" 10pt.....with half his rack in velvet! The other was a monster buck we've been watching the past 2 years, he had some dried velvet on the back of his bases. We checked the crick bottom where they found these two, checked their carcasses and they were in perfect shape, no broken bone or signs of wounds from poachers or any hunting. We did a quick search and found a third buck, a 2.5 yr old 8pt in full velvet too? Another reason we kinda put out poaching is that a buck looses velvet at latest in the 2nd week in Sept. The corn wasn't near out making it real tough for poachers to do their dirty work.. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

Another point is the bases on all these bucks are real sharp, they have zero traces of trees or anything from rubs in their bases. We would have figured these bucks to have some sign of making a couple rubs if they had died a little later in the yr like late Sept. or into Oct., correct?

Our question is has anyone been finding other dead deer this season? Has EHD or Blue Tounge been reported in IA, particuarly the Loess Hills/western Iowa? We'll be back out looking over the crick bottoms and we hope to not find any more deer but we got a feeling these won't be our last finds.

Here are some quick pictures for reference to the velvet.....and the fact the one is big...real big! We scored him tonight and grossed him at 178 (we finally got a chance to get a soft tape and sit down and get a solid score, the string and tape measure wasn't real good)!!! He blew up from last year and now makes his shed look small! Thanks for any help in advance

I found 3 dead bucks on one of our farms only 50 yards from the road. I figured poachers too. I looked all over no brocken ribs no holes in the skull nothing. These might be a few more blue tongue casualties

We've talked to the county DNR officer and wildlife biologist and they weren't too concerned. They said if ya want to tag them to make them legally yours then go ahead but they wouldn't issue us any deprevation or salvage tags, we had to sacrafice a bow tag for the big boy. They didn't care to bother with testing them so I guess we're not going to.

We get along with our DNR officer pretty well, talk to him quite a bit. I guess we just wanted to make it legal so we can take him to the Classic! Check him out in the spring!

A farmer where I hunt in jackson co. told me this past weekend that rumor has it that they found over 70 deer by Maquoketa with blue tongue.

Could the blue tongue been caused by meth shack runoff into creeks and ponds?

I have'nt heard or seen anything in my part of Monona county,or Woodbury county. I hunt both areas. I'm a barber and talk to a ton of hunters in both areas! Have'nt heard anything out of Cherokee Ida or Plymouth as far as that goes! Usally hear about them from bird hunters. They hit all the creeks draws and terrace's.

Well that really sucks. I hope we don't get that around here. I saw it in WY a few years back and it wiped out most of the whitetails. Took about 3 years for them to come back.
