Pig Hunt

Has anyone had a good experience with a pig hunt? Since the deer season is over, or close to it, I'd hate to be done hunting and have always wanted to try the pigs.

I knew a guy who hunted a wild boar in Tama, the farmer's name is Hinegartner. He had elk and other game. I am not sure of the extent of his operation today. His place is right on Hwy 30, by the Casino.

Erv Wagner of AF&S in Des Moines used a brochure to record the scores of one of my deer. I never paid any attention to what brochure it was, but was from Faust Family Hog Farm. In Dexter, IA they'll let a market hog loose in 16 acres and let you hunt it. I imagine you get to keep the pork as well. 515-462-2649

In no way affiliated with AF&S or Faust Family.

are there wild pigs in iowa? I think those would be fun to hunt!

With prices being sort of down, you could probably arrange for a hunt in one of the many "high fence" enclosures I pass on the way to my hunting spots. Maybe even in one of those year-round weather enclosures to make it more pleasant in the winter.

Even the "wild hunts" on the hunting shows don't really look that "sporting". Maybe it's better in "real life", one of those things that don't project well on TV.

I will be heading to Texas for a three day wild free ranging hog hunt on the 17th of January. I will post again with results and comments from the hunt.

Thanks and good huntin,

OneCam - I have been considering a Texas pig hun this winter yet too. Would you be at liberty to divulge where you are going and the rates/terms, etc?

The research I have so far has found some attractive options in terms of prices/terms, but those are in deep south Texas. The north Texas options are about double the price, but of course they are 5-8 hours closer to Iowa in terms of driving distance.

Maybe I am being unrealistic, but I guess I am looking for a north Texas hunt(closer to Iowa) at a south Texas price(less expensive).

At any rate, any help you could provide would be appreciated.

Thanks, Dave A.

That's what I'm talking about also. I'd like to go south, but the closer the better.

We are going to hunt close to Kaufman, TX which is SE of Dallas, about a one hour additional drive.

I actually hunted with the outfitter just one morning last December, I just happened to be in Dallas on business. Although I didn't have a harvest opportunity, I saw some truely awesome sign that showed there were plenty of hogs. The outfitter caters to bowhunters. Hunting is done by either sitting in permanent stands (I will be bringing my portables for comfort) or stalking. The rates are $100 a day, he does have a rustic cabin to stay in as well for a small additional fee. I will give you a full report after we return.

Thanks and good huntin,

Dave, there are usually a lot of pig hunts advertised in the Houston and Dallas papers. Might be a good resource to look at if you haven't already. I am from East Texas and have been able to hunt some big pigs on some of our land there. Its a lot of fun. Good luck.

North Star- Gameland (Hinegartner's) Near Tama was getting $600 for the trophy size hogs last in Jan of last year. No kill no pay. I'd consider it if time off work is hard to come by. Nice fellows and good looking hogs.

You could try going to 'Bowsite' then find the Texas conference and ask there for information. I'm guessing you'd get some ideas.

I'd be interested to hear how your hunt turns out! Keep us posted.

Being that I now live in Texas I would be more then glad to give you all some pointers on where to hunt hogs in Texas.I'm headed out on the 25th to hunt hogs and Rams in deep south Texas. Prices vary from $65.00 a day to $300.00 a day plus kill fees.
Good luck and enjoy.
