Pine Trees

This past weekend I have been seeing a lot of whitetails nibbling
on pine trees. I actually have two trees in the middle of a plot
that are getting browsed on more than the turnips.
I assume this is because of the ice and snow and the availability of other food?

Pine needles from what I understand have no nutritional value?

If they are already eating pine needles it may be a long winter for the deer and turkeys?

The deer at my place will browse red and white pines right beside my plot of standing corn, beans, rye, and turnips. They will even walk into the yard and browse white pines that are within 10' of my shop building. Apparently pines are a preferred winter browse even in years without snow, because there are plenty of other options for them.
