Plans for opening weekend?

Is anyone going to hunt this weekend? If so, what do you do when it's early season and unseasonably warm?
80 degree Temps will probably keep me doing other things this weekend. I see cooler weather forecasted for later the next week. That will likely get me out there .

I’ll be out Saturday! I hunt deeper in the woods on ridge’s close to the thick nasty stuff and hope there’s a good acorn mast.
I’m getting pics of deer feeding up till 9:00 in the morning at as early as 4:00 in the afternoon.

My motto for over three decades is when it’s deer season it’s time to hunt. Good luck everyone!

Don't plan to hunt. I use to hunt hard all October long when I had free time after school.(Burning out my tree stands)
Since I've gotten older, and busier with the farm. I m more selective about my sits, Where, When, How, etc etc.

Hunting Smarter not Harder. Have shot bigger bucks since I've taken this route.

I agree if you only have limited areas to hunt on burning out your sites.
I hunt up to four county’s and never touch my rut spots till November.

Still youth season this weekend, so will be out with the kids. Does anyone know if I am allowed to take two kids at once with a single adult or does it have to be 1-to-1?

I need to buy a license yet, so obviously not too stoked. I haven't hung any stands yet, either. Use the Novix and LW to hang and hunt usually, so stands not up isn't a huge issue.

Iowa residents who are younger than 16 years old on the day they obtain a license are eligible for the Youth Season subject to the following restrictions:
  • While hunting, youth hunters must be under the direct supervision of an adult mentor who has a valid Hunting License and has paid the Habitat Fee, if the adult is normally required to have them to hunt. Only one youth hunter may accompany each adult mentor.

On my place, buck activity doesn't happen until mid Oct. It is only 20 acres and I don't want to burn my stands. So, I normally wait a few weeks to begin. I did that last year (very hard to wait) and saw chasing on my first sit. I'll do the same this year.

I appreciate you looking that up and sharing

I'll probably go out and try to put some does down. Similar to Ishi I've had good movement mornings till about 9am and movement from 5pm on in evenings. I don't hunt my rut spots in early season.

Bummer I couldn’t hunt the opener this year!
After 41 years of gentle coaching my wife on getting rid of her piano she finally decided to let it go!! After two months someone finally decided to come and get it today so I’m keeping her busy so she doesn’t change her mind!

I've learned over the years to hunt less (used to hunt just about every day) and wait for the right conditions. Usually there's only younger buck movement during daylight for the most part. I wait until around October 20th to start hunting, better chance of mature buck wandering later in the mornings checking out doe bedding areas. Been very successful being patient waiting for the right conditions.

I’ll add this. With todays emphasis on deer very few small game hunt. God forbid you walk on the farm you hunt before Halloween. I can’t count how many beautiful bucks walked by me in early October, midday 60 and sunny; while I had .22 in my lap hunting squirrels.

I think moon phase, barometric pressure, morning v evening etc is over played. We’re not building the next shuttle for NASA. It’s deer hunting. Get out there. You never know!
