Plant ID

Hello, could use some help with a plant id.

It's about 3' tall, the stem reminds me of golden rod. The top 1/4 has layers of dark brown / black bean pods that look like minature honey locus pods. There are 3-4 layers per stalk and are arranged like palm trees branches. No leaves, but the beans in the pods rattle when shook. Plants are found in bottom land next to creek with limited sun light, Hills Iowa area.

I'd post a pic if I had the skills...

Thanks Jody

I think you may be right Pharmer. Can't seem to find a fall pic of the peas w/o leaves and flowers. I have never been around partridge peas at all. Do the pods turn a dark chocolate brown? Size shape and growning locations seems to match internet descriptions verbatim...

Yup, sounds like partridge pea, good for wildlife like quail.

P.Pea is in most NWSG mixes and you see it in DOT road plantings alot as well.
