Ok guys big decison to be made !! Im planning on planting my fall food plots this weekend in southern iowa . but looking at 10 day forecast it looks like hot ( 90s) and no rain in sight !! So do i wait till late august ? My 2 options are beginning or end of month ! Those are my 2 options ? Thoughts ????

What are u planting? That’s where my answer be based in. More than weather.
“Plant in the dust, your grain bins will bust. Plant in the mud, harvest will be a dud”. I’d rather plant in dry dusty ground than muck. Even though it’s dry right now.... that won’t last & most areas have good subsoil moisture. If your area is truly lacking subsoil moisture - I would wait for a rain to replenish BUT I’d wait until it dried back out before planting.
Brassicas & no major lack of subsoil moisture - plant now. Mixes with rye/oats/peas/clover - wait - too early.

Same dilemma around Brighton. If it doesn't rain soon I will just switch all my brassica plots to triticale or winter rye in a month or so. It sucks but if you want to have late winter food sometimes you have to switch gears.

Even in NW Iowa ground is dry after tilling today. I have no plans to put turnips in until there are a couple of decent chances of rain in the 5 day forecast. Would rather wait till near 9/1 and hit a rain than putting them in now and sitting in dry ground for 3 weeks.
