Planting first food plot this spring

Ok, a few questions I have you all. How early can I plant a food plot? Normally we get out in the fields around second week of April to plant the row crops. This year we are going to dedicate about a acre or so of our CRP ground to a food plot. The soil has been tested as we tested it last year I think. Also what do you prefer to grow. I am not looking into growing huge racks or anything just want to give the turkeys a little better food source. Also the deer for that matter.

I would like something that does not require a whole lot of maintenance. I plan on burning off a small area and would like to toss out the seed. Is it that easy or does this require me to bring in tractor and all the equipment to get started.

Any thoughts/opinions would be good.

Probably the easiest food source to plant and grow is white clover and it will work for both turkeys and deer. You can just kill the sod grass with roundup and then broadcast the seeds if you wanted too.

I would suggest looking over the threads in Dbltree's Corner (see top of this forum page) and look on the various threads (such as clover, cereal grains etc) and see what might work best for you. Those threads will tell you what is required to grow each type of crop also. :)
