Got my SunFlower rubbing posts beds dug today.

10th of June is target date.

You fellas planting the edible or oil seeds?

Nothing special 1983.
I just took a hoe and raked out a 12"×12" bed about 3" deep, put in 1/4 cup of triple 19 fertilizer, flooded each with water and covered them back with dirt. Will add seeds bout the 10th.
Necessary, I don't know?, just the way I've been doing it for years.
Seems to always work real well.
Gonna do 9 plants this year. 3 within 25 yards of my cabins deck. (Grin) lol.
It's just SO FUN watching bucks beeline for them mid October and tear them up.

How many do you plant in a cluster or just 1 per spot?

I plant them about 5_6 feet apart.
2 last year got to 14'. And bout 5" diameter.
5” - holy cow! I see why they rub them! We’ve experimented with sorghum stalks as scrape limbs - and it works decent. Similar philosophy I suppose. I might have to try your method!

I thought sunflowers were supposed to be planted at 5# per acre. That’s how I planted mine. Let us know how the 25# rate works out.

For those that have never planted them before, the deer love them. The first year they may just nibble on them. But it’s like they develop a taste. The next year, I wouldn’t plant anything less than 3/4 acres if you have a high deer density.

They love them enough that if you’re wanting to plant an early season kill plot I wouldn’t hesitate to make it heavy with sunflowers.

Some great stands there. Noticing much deer activity in them?

Curious to try to mix these with a grain sorghum planting, next year perhaps..

Almost no deer browse pressure on these - low deer density area, and away from cover as well. 2 acres was also probably enough that I would’ve been hard pressed to see any pressure.
