poached Iowa elk

I have been hearing rumors for the last couple of months about a wild bull elk around my area. I was a little skeptical but still excited about the idea of a wild elk coming under my stand.
Well Im no longer skeptical, but I wont be seeing him under my stand. Somebody shot the elk this weekend. The guy was later arrested ( you dont shoot an elk around here without getting found out). Im curious if anyone knows the fine he will pay?
Here is a pic of the elk.

I don't know of anywhere in Iowa you can shoot an elk and get away with it unless your the only one that knew about it.

Great story - great picture - if you see anything more about it in the papers up there keep us informed on what it cost - the regulations show a $2500 fine.

Might as well hunt a ranch

Must be the same one spotted around me. Canton, SD. He was seen by Newton Hills several times by reliable friends. I never seen him personally though.

Last I heard he was seen in Iowa.
Thanks for the update

ya, same elk. He was shot near Inspiration Hills, only a couple miles from Newton Hills the way a crow flies.

Definately needed some help gettin him in the truck!!!! Baffled on the fine? I thought if i "poach" a booner whitetail it would cost $15,000 + ? why would a Elk only be $2,500? I think it is not considered a native species to Iowa no?

That's too bad for him!!! We could have also had some elk to look at here in Iowa. Oh, well. They just couldn't stop blazzing at the really big "deer"!!

Elk in Iowa???? Too bad he's in a truck instead of in the rolling hills of the countrysides. That would be awesome to have seen him wandering about!

What exactly could the charges be? Its no different then shooting a cow that has been running around wild.

Im glad they shot it, and dont think they should be fined at all. Elk in Iowa is bad, shoot them all in my opinion

Hey Liv,
Just curious on why you wouldn't want elk in Iowa? diseases?, more crop damage? Not trying to disagree with you just curious.

Mainly Crop Damage, but I honestly don't think they should get fined for shooting it in Iowa, it doesn't really belong here. It seems no different than a stray dog, cat, cow, pig etc to me

Hey Liv...if one of my Black Angus gets through the fence, don't shoot it unless you got a really big deer cart and $1250 bucks in your back pocket!

a few years back 7 cows got loose around my uncles farm, nobody could catch them, nobody would claim them, the DNR said to take them out so him and his buddies got their rifles and slug guns and eventually got them all. Those are the kind of wild cows im referring to Ghost, not your Black Angus.....
