I just got off the phone with a guy from Farm Bureau Insurance, he told me this next year they will be presenting a bill, along with the DNR,to the House and Senate, to start eliminating the elk in Iowa.
"These elk are ruining everything", he stated. They are pushing for 5 cow elk tags per hunter, plus 2 bull elk tags, per hunter. You may harvest these elk, with guns, bows, cars, trucks, combine's, and M16's.
There will also be a special season for elk, that will run during turkey season. So be good and hidden,(behind) a BIG tree!!
"We feel that there just too many elk In Iowa" stated the Insurance man."With what we have had to pay out, these last few years, I've had to sell one of my homes in Cancun, Mexico"
"In 2007 we are going after the squirrel"s!", he also added.

Oh no Stuffy, I hope I'm just missing your sarcasm. For what it's worth Elk are native to almost all of the US, its just that we decided that they weren't supposed to be here.

Ya, no kidding. This is the first time I have ever heard of elk in Iowa! So, are they really thinking about letting guys go out there with anything for these elk???

Definately needed some help gettin him in the truck!!!! Baffled on the fine? I thought if i "poach" a booner whitetail it would cost $15,000 + ? why would a Elk only be $2,500? I think it is not considered a native species to Iowa no?

Page 8 of the General Hunting Regs has that dollar amount listed. It has listing for fines for all sorts of non-game animals.

I also believe there are other fines involved.

I agree with LIV. You don't know where the elk came from. Could have come from an elk ranch and could possibly spread CWD to the deer herd. Give the guy who shot it a pat on the back not a fine!

Yes I do and I remember a guy shot it claiming it was charging him and he needed to do it to save his life...

But, if memory serves, it was about 150-200 yards out when he did it.

There were daily broadcasts of the mooses location on the radio, it was really a big deal.

I remember that OK Hawkeye.....been quite a few years ago. Had some sort of brain disease or something????? CWD???? I know that was back in the day before they knew much about cwd.

I remember about 3 moose that made it through central Iowa the last 20 years. The closest to me was cited in the Indian Creek bottom near Maxwell, hence the name "Maxwell the Moose". He made it to Missouri. Of course if they make it to Missouri they don't last long. 30-06. All the experts claim some sort of brain parasite causes them to lose there sense and go South. I think it is a similar affliction that those of us that live north of Interstate 80 (arctic circle) have. Sorry it was -11 at my house today.

Elk used to be all over the country they say. We had elk reintroduced here in arkansas back in the mid 80's. I think they started with 100 or so. Now I think there are 500-600 in the hills. We now have a raffle draw season where they give out about 20 permits. One is auctioned off to the Elk Foundation and goes for $10-$15k usually. Every year there are elk killed in the 330"-370" range and there are bigger out there they say.
Kinda neat to have them back around. Mostly on state and national forrest, some have migrated to private ground. There are a few landowners that don't care for them though.

elk used to be native to iowa, as were mountain lions. i really don't see where the elk shooter should get a fine.

Don't think there is a fine for killing a stray elk.. We have a stay cow elk running around here and the owner said shoot her.....he is afraid someone will hit her with a car and he would be sued.

Spoke with the county sheriff where this took place this past weekend. He is suggesting that the DNR doe NOT fine this guy.

It was truely an accident.

72 year old hunter that got confused. The hunter called the DNR and Sherriff's office telling him what he had done. There is no malace what so ever.

I don't know what is to become of it yet, but the sherriff agrees with me, if it's NOT a native game animal, why is there a fine. However that is a discussion for another time.

your story is a bit different than the one Ive been hearing. The 72 yr old man part is the same, also the part about turning himself in, but the rest is a bit different. Ill wait for official word before saying anymore.

I don't think a fine should be issued to the man who shot the elk. Can you imagine how much damage an elk could do to a cornfield. If you can shoot mt. lions, why not elk?
