I’m of the opinion that they are much lesser of the evils of the onslaught of all the hunting tech/weapons that have been introduced and made legal the last 5-10 years. However with that said and with %100 conservation of the resource being most important I would fully support the banning of smokeless muzzleloaders during both the early and late muzzy seasons.
Unless I’m missing the boat completely wasn’t muzzleloader seasons introduced as another way for hunters to help manage the herd although with a primitive weapon??? Enough said right!

I have owned a smokeless muzzleloader for more years than I can remember and it has never accounted for a deer that I could not have easily shot with a black powder or black powder substitute gun. In fact, my longest shot to date was using 100 grains of Triple 7 powder. The single biggest benefit to using smokeless powder for me is not having to clean my gun all the time. To consistently shoot tiny groups at very long distances requires a lot of practice and I think that applies to whatever weapon you are using.

Banning smokeless powder during late season would in turn make AR pistols illegal during that season though …. So I do like that!!

Unless someone can find load data for 450 bushmaster with blackhorn 209

Also I can’t speak for anyone else, but the change from slugs, to straight walls, to .35 and up. And going from triple 7 ,to blackhorn, to smokeless has only made me more selective about what I want to shoot. I shoot far fewer deer now than I did party hunting years ago with slug guns.

All these questions of should we get rid of this and should we get rid of that or make this or that illegal...the last 5-10 yrs we passed these laws to make hunting and harvesting easier or allowed to use all this technology(cell cams, thermal scopes and thermal drones ....now that the deer #s are at an all time low people wanna back peddle...

I would argue that we the people as in the residents of Iowa had much of an impact on legalizing all of these new tech technologies. These things happen most always out of special interest groups, paid lobbyists and politicians. Even our own states DNR sadly does not have much ability to pass or reject game laws. That needs to change!!!

not speaking just on smokeless (I own one and have shot fewer deer with it than previous guns) but of course people want to back pedal on some issues. When results are happening, you take that information and usually have to change something to better the outcome. It's certainly harder to take the candy away from the kid than just never give them candy in the first place. But if my kid constantly is getting cavities and rotting teeth, one thing id clearly look at is to stop giving them candy.

Before the straight wall change all of my. Gun hunting was done blithe a smokeless MZ. I think a good compromise would be to ban scopes during the early and last Mz seasons. With this change the AR pistol scam could remain the same.

I stopped carrying my SML in shotgun when Iowa allowed straight wall cartridges. I don’t know the exact figures but unless you also address shotgun, I doubt you’re going to be limiting the overall doe harvest in a meaningful way.

Exactly

Kind of like the remark below... did "we" pass these changes or were they just shoved down our throats?

I don't remember any votes, town halls, or even subcommittee meetings. That was also before most of us were paying any attention...

Iowa had gone so long with very few changes I think most of us were blindsided....
