Pope & Young changes let-off rule.

This seems to be a result of the $$$'s in my opinion. I'd be interested to know how many members they loose vs. gain do to this decision. I've tossed it around in the past, but can't see myself being a member, even though I think their conservation efforts are well done. I can't get past what the book has done as a whole to our deer hunting. Maybe in another few years they'll let the X-bow shooters get in to.

I'm sure that the longbow and recurve boys didn't know what to think when compounds came into the picture.

It's an ever changing world. I just don't want the sport to be all about big racks and inches.

Hurray for finally getting this changed. A good decision probably driven by what the membership wanted and like was already said, driven by the almighty $$$$$. It is something that needed to be done and it probably should have been done a few years ago.

I'm with you Pupster......

There is only one book that anyone needs to be truly concerned about.

The sport will survive just fine with or without let-off rules if the people involved don't argue amongst themselves. We have more important issues to deal with , like getting more kids involved and fighting the anti's with the true facts we all on this site know to be true. I know I enjoy myself no matter what my weapon of choice is....compound, stick bow or camcorder. Choose and use what best suits your needs and don't worry about someone else's vision of what a trophy is suppose to score.

I am indifferent on the change. I doubt I will ever enter any of mine in P+Y books, maybe B+C if I ever shoot one. I always thought this was a silly rule and aggree with an above post on this likely being money driven. Just my 2 cents

i agree with shredder. record books mean nothing to me as long as when i hold that rack in my hands it makes me smile and recall great memories. of course now when i shoot the new world record typical i can enter it with my 75% RazorTEC.

It always disturbs me just a little when someone says that the record books mean nothing to them.

REMEMBER, B&C and P&Y are CONSERVATION groups that just happen to include record books to raise money and support for their conservation needs.

Whether you decide to enter your trophy or not... these clubs still have a great cause.

...what conservation work has P&Y or B&C taken part in or initiated?...when I think of conservation groups I think of PF or DU...I have always assumed that keeping the records was their main focus...

I truly believe it's up to the individual hunter, as to whether or not they enter their trophies into the record book. However I do support the Pope & Young Clubs efforts in promoting fair chase and contributing to the promotion of hunting and the shooting sports.
Here's some info on what the Pope & young Club has contributed. Good Luck to all those still chasing a big one.

adamo - just because i don't want to enter my deer in a record books doesn't mean i think the organizations are not worthwhile. it's just that to me a number can't take the place of the memories of the hunt.

...what conservation work has P&Y or B&C taken part in or initiated?..

Hershy---If you look at the history of wildlife conservation in this country it basically started with the Boone and Crockett Club. In 1887 Teddy Roosevelt called a dinner meeting that was attended by some of the nation's leading explorers, writers, military leaders, scientists and political leaders. These men had several things in common. Each was an enthusiastic big-game hunter and each had traveled extensively in the West. They formed the nucleus of the Boone and Crockett Club, the principal function of which was to fight for the preservation of the big game of North America. All these men realized that the country's wildlife was not an unlimited resouce. You have to remember at this time there were very few game laws and market hunting was going full bore.

Without the leadership of B&C at this critical juncture most likely many big game species would now be extinct and we would not be enjoying the abundant and varied wildlife present today. They are still on the cutting edge of wildlife leadership and conservation.

A superb book on the subject is entitled "An American Crusade for Wildlife" by James B. Trefethen. I believe that B&C is going to print an updated book in the near future. I bought mine many years ago while in college.

The Pope and Young Club was founded by Glenn St. Charles in 1961. This was at a time when state fish and game agencies didn't believe that a bow and arrow was capable of killing big game animals with any degree of success. That was the initial reason behind recording bow-killed big game--to prove to those agencies that there should be archery seasons.

I want to enter mine. Not for me but to give credit to the animal and to the state that it came from. Give credit to the animal, show where it was harvested and support the organization. Another one that is free is the state's records on big bucks. That is another that I like so that we can see where the big ones were harvested. I just wish they would share last years records.

adamo - i figured that. email and forums are hard places to get a point across without rubbing someone the wrong way. no harm done.
