Portable targets

I've noticed some negative feedback on The Block when it's being used for broadhead practice. What portable targets would you all recommend for broadhead shooting and which for target? Right now I just shoot into a dirt bank at the range, but would like to get something to take with me and leave in my truck so I can shoot a half dozen shots before I climb up into the stand.

The Morrell yellow jacket target is great. I've put a number of jackhammers in it and it is still in great condition, not nearly the damage done to it as when I shot them into my Block. It doesn't weigh a lot, but is fairly large (about 2x2), so I don't know it you consider it portable or not. And the price is right, $45!

Chances are really good that I'll be using this target MOSTLY with field points, someone mentioned that the Yellow Jacket would REALLY hang onto an arrow shot with field tips?

I have heard that the yellow jacket is great for boradheads and bad for field points because the field points are a pain to pull out of the target. Broadheads have torn my Block to shreads!

I use a shot up small (coon, coyote etc) 3d targets. Just put some florescent rifle targets on it and you are good to go. Usually you can pick them up at a 3d shoot for next to nothing. I have been shooting the same beaver for a few years now.

Ya know... nevermind.

Block is fine for field points, sucks for broadheads (they are easy to get out but really tear it up). However, I am not sure if they have changed the block, my dad and brother have the Glendale Buck and it has a block insert, hands down the best target for broadheads and fieldpoints, doesn't get beat up at all (the insert is basically just a Block-3D or whatever it is called, the one they advertise with four different sides to shoot)

I have had the block going on 3 years. I believe I purchsed it for around 60$. It has held up really well and is great for storing int he back of the pickup for on the go practice. However, I have not shot a ton of broadheads into it.

That is the one, it is a beast and will last forever, broadheads or regular heads.

Those yellow jackets do hold on to the field tip arrows REALLY REALLY well! i have one in my shed.. but havent gotten it out since i bought my new one.. i cant think of the name of it.. but ill let ya know! the yellow jackets actually pissed me off.. i couldnt get the out with one guy unless i was standing on the target pullin up on the arrow!!! just picture that! a 6'4" 225 lb. kid standin on top of a little target pullin out a 29 in long arrow! kinda retarded!!

I can't see how the Yellow Jackets hold them THAT well? What brand of arrows? Are they the kind that are painted or with little grooves on them?

Save your money Muddy.....buy a bag target for your field points. They're three times less expensive than the "Block" style targets, and will last just as long if you take halfway good care of them. All you need is a stick to prop them up if you're checking them out in the field before you head out to your stand. I've got a block from a few years ago......not worth the money they want for them.

Lots of good advise. It is true the yellow jacket broadhead target still hold onto a field tip. Try dad's if you have time to waste trying to get your field point back. I have a yellow jacket bag target as well that works great. The old style block is horrible for broadheads and the newer one is much better. Bag is quite a bit cheaper if you are just looking for a field point target.

Muddy,

I honestly dont know how they hold that well... i use super carbons! and not grooves that i know of! but it was pathetic how much the target held onto that arrow! im not jokin either! i think my mom caught me on tape with it and i finally got the arrow out of the target..(standin on the target) and me flyin off of it when it suddenly came lose and i had dog [censored] on my back! it was pretty hilarious! i just wouldnt recommend them at all! and be careful shootin into dirt banks at shooting ranges! haha if i can i will post a picture of a broadhead i shot at the range that hit sumthin!

My block 4x4 is awesome for field points and broadheads. My Montecs cut in and pull out smooth as butter. The montec practice heads tear it to shreds, though. If it's razor sharp, it won't damage it at all. I've never tried an expandable in it.

I was shooting practice Montecs into my Block. I guess it was the "old style" Block becuase it isn't the 4x4. It got absolutely shredded from the Montecs and not there are soft spots all over the place that won't stop arrows.

Jackhammer were doing a pretty good number on my Block so that's why I got a Yellow Jacket.
Muddy, the Yellow Jacket really does hold field tips. Kinda like if you've ever shot and arrow into the bottom of a Block and tried to pull it out. It ain't easy.

I wonder if the yellow jacket would loosen up after use? If it is that tough you'd think the thing would last for ages, and it's cheaper than the block?
