Portal page article

Anybody read the article about NR bow antlerless tags on the portal page? I confess I’ll have to read it several times and draw myself graphs to keep the numbers and percentages right.

The last paragraph also baffles me:

• Emphasize the need to increase the overall nonresident quota for Any Deer licenses to help compensate for the reduction in recreational opportunities caused by shifting the optional nonresident antlerless-only licenses out of the Archery and Late Muzzleloader seasons.

“Reduction in recreational opportunities”? How can there be a loss of recreational opportunities if the quota stays the same? I’m thinking, and it ain’t my strong suit, that the same number of tags will be sold, they’ll just switch to shotgun hunting, so where is the lost opportunity?

Looks to me like there will be way more deer killed with the tags shifting to shotgun anyway so why increase the tags if recreational opportunities aren’t really lost?

What am I missing here?

The way I read it:

Non-residents who bought optional antlerless only tags for late archery and late muzzy had such a terrible success/reporting rate that they must have bought these licenses for some other reason than filling them (hunt on somebody else's buck tag?). Therefore, if we move these tags to shotgun season where the non-residents have proven they are willing to shoot does, more deer will be killed.

Since we have moved these licenses out of the late seasons, the NR does not have those seasons as a recreational opportunity, so we will propose to increase the NR quota so that we can give some any sex tags out in the late seasons.

Does it make sense to me? I dunno. Maybe those licenses were bought with good intentions of being used and due to weather, time commitments, family, holidays, etc. they didn't get used.

I thought the late ML season NR tags were being cut too? So maybe they were gonna open more up for late late doe season?

Now if I were a nonresident I'd say I bought the tags outta the goodness in my heart to help fund the DNR. I never intended to use them anyway.

That whole article is just begging for a graph to help keep it all straight.

Here is another thought, bad as it may be. Would the DNR be trying to appease resident huinters by appearing to be getting tough on NR tag usage while doing an end run to increase the NR tags and eventually restore the bow and late ML NR tags? Perhaps a little to Machiavellian?

Neither, but a glass of Makers would go pretty good right now.

Top of my head, Machiaveli was a king or a prince in the "dark ages" that used cunning and gile to get what he wanted. He was a master at setting up what appeared to be a plan that others would follow, and then the real pourpose of his plan was found out later. His methods are the basis of most spy novels and soap operas.

I'm sure there is a wikipedia reference to him.

So when I say "too Machiavellian" I mean maybe I'm see plans within plans that don't exist. I'm not paranoid, they really are after me.
