Prairie Pups

So a buddy and i are graduating this year and we decided it would be fun to take a trip and go shoot prairie dogs. We had originally palnned on going out to south dakota but i was recently informed that there are no longer any pups out there....anyone have any idea as to where we could shoot them?

A few of us went out to Western SD this past summer and had a blast. We didn't have a hunt lined up or anything, our plan was to just bar hop and ask around. It wasn't 20 minutes at the first bar and we had 3 different ranchers that wanted us to come out to their property. We had plenty of dogs to shoot at. Search around the net for a map of SD Prairie Dogs collonies and go from there.

And if you want a REAL challenge thats a ton of fun, bring a bow and arrow with Judo points. I gave up the gun almost right away for the bow.

Good luck in your search

No he is talking about the town I use to go too. They were poisoned. I no longer have the connection I did. they are looking for a new spot.

Cousin tells me they have quite a few in southwest Nebraska, and most folks will let you shoot if asked nicely.

If you can't find a place to go, I'll go to the pet store and buy up all the hamsters and let them go in the pasture. I charge a case of the finest natural light per day. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Check out Eastern Wyoming. My buddy and I went out there 2 years ago, lots of prairie dogs to shoot out there. We contacted the Chamber of Commerce in Newcastle, WY and they set us up with a list of land owners. It's a longer drive but it was worth it. Also you don't have to pay a "guide" fee which I have heard is required on a lot of Indian reservations in SD now.

South Dakota has alot of private ranches that will allow for free. It's still nice to give something in return. We go by Platte S.D. and give twenty five bucks a piece, and some times a case of beer that the rancher likes. I would'nt go where you have to pay a guide fee.
