Well...I gotta say...I'm happier than pigs in poop right now...today is my birthday and all I wanted for my birthday was to take my wife Rachel turkey hunting and watch her lay the smackdown on a big ol tom and my wish came true this morning at 6:45 after the most exciting turkey hunt I've ever been on!
I'm not sure if I'm so excited because I got to watch Rachel drop the hammer on this tom or if it is because of how it all happened!
We got set up just as it was getting light about 50 yards into the timber from where I shot my Jake on Thursday morning....yes...for those of you that don't know I shot a jake and now my wife shot a tom.
I'll never hear the end of this one...
Anyway....just as we were putting the stake in the first decoy the first gobble of the morning broke the silence. We quickly got set up and had 2 gobbling pretty close and 1 far away on the other side of the timber. I thought....hell yeah...we're not far from where those 2 are roosting...maybe we'll get lucky and they'll plop right down in the decs upon fly down.
At about 5:50 we heard the 2 fly down and then a hen started yelping like crazy! AAGH! No...go away!!! Minutes after they flew down I saw them through the timber chasing that hen and the next thing we knew they were sounding off from what seemed like 150 yards away...my heart sunk...I wanted them to come in so bad right away. The other far off one kept gobbling every 2 minutes so at about 6:30 I thought about heading after him since the 2 we heard were now chasing that hen. I've been burned before by moving too early so Rachel talked me into staying for a little while longer...good thing she did that!
Just for fun I thought I'd let out a series of aggressive calls just to see what happened..in the middle of my calling sequence 3 gobbles echoed through the timber and they were extremely close!!! I couldn't believe it! Rachel then said "I think I can hear them...call again". So I waited a second or two and let out another yelp...good God the timber came unglued!! Rachel was like...(whispering of course)...OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD....I look to the left and here came FIVE TOMS IN FULL STRUT!!! I thought my heart was going to pound out of my chest and if I was this pumped I knew Rachel was!!! She's never seen them up close in full strut like that so it was absolutely perfect! I couldn't believe there were that many! They hadn't gobbled together all morning so we had no idea they were all there!!
For what seemed like eternity (probably only 4 or 5 seconds) they closed the gap and stopped about 10 feet from the decs....and about 15 yards from us. The lead one had a busted tail so I told Rachel - "shoot the second one"...BOOM!!!!!!! SHE ROCKED THAT BIRD!!! The 20 guage I bought her for our anniversary last fall echoed through the timber! He flipped over and was done! I jumped up like my ass was on fire and started yelling! She then says "Ryan, calm down, it's my turkey!" I couldn't calm down...everything was so perfect for her! She finally stood up and we went over and stood over her first turkey...shot while she is 2 and a half months pregnant!!! Nobody on here knew that...yep...there's going to finally be Shoot2Kill junior in December!!!
Sorry for all the pics, but I just have to show her off!!!
Limb Hanger!!!!!
HOOKS! They're not huge but they'll work!
Stats -
24.0 lbs
10 inch beard
1 and a 1/4 inch spurs
Total hunt time - 1 hour.
One happy wife and one extremely happy husband on his birthday!
It's kind of sad now though...it all happened so quick and then just like that it was over! Total hunt time - one hour exactly. I was going to set up the video camera today on a tripod behind us and try to get the hunt on film but thanks to it getting light so soon I was in a hurry when we left the truck so I forgot it!! I could have watched that video a thousand times today....oh well...next year!
