My wife gave me a Thompson Center/Emcore. What a gift. Now I need to figure out what I need to hunt with it. She bought the blued barrel and I was thinking of trading it for the stainless. What does everybody here think, blued or stainless? How about powder and sabots? Off to the Tec forum with me.
 
I would go with the stainless. 777 powder and barnes 250 gr. expanders. Just my thoughts..Merry Xmas.. You can not beat a gift like that.
 
If you can get a good trade, the SS can be considered but if you are going to take a beating on the deal, I would stay with the blued barrel. They shoot just as good and all barrels, regardless of material of construction, still need cleaned at the end of the day (when shot). My blued Knight is 5 years old but has no rust or corrosion of any kind and is in like new condition. I had a great deal this year on a new SS Knight and bought it too but would not have been afraid to go with another blued one if that was what was offered.
 
well you made out like a bandit. i agree with 150, if you don't get hosed on the deal, stainless would be better. if you go with blued, just be a bit anal about cleaning it. if you use 777, you may want to go with the low flash primers, to keep the "crud ring" factor lower. i would use bullets made by tc, to ensure best fit. ie. powerbelts and shockwaves, to name a few

Great present!!!I'll give you the rundown on my finding's.
I bought the stainless with walnut stock,I think stainless is the way to go mainly because it is more forgiving to corrosion.
I've shot alot of bullet powder combo's all summer and what I ended up with is 100 gr's of 777 in pellet form and the 250 barnes xpander,although they have a new one out I want to try out next year.
With this combo I'm shooting 3" group's out to 150 yd's.I will not take that shot unless everything feel's good and I've got a solid rest but I feel very cofident I can make that shot.
I also put a Nikon prostaff 3X9X40 on it and for the money it is a hell of a scope.
Rudd has a tripod mounted on his and I thought about putting one on mine some time I just haven't done it yet.

Awesome present. Get the SS its much more durable. I use Triple-7 150 grains of pellets and the 300Grain T/C Shockwave or the Hornady SST (same bullet). I'd be willing to bet that no other bullet will shoot better than them. You can shoot unbelievable groups with that set-up!!! Take a look at the trajectory. The 250 gr. bullet shoots well also, I prefer the extra knock down power though.

Another vote for stainless, I have one of each, wish they were both stainless. I am fairly hard on my ML's and it shows on the blue'd.
 
You've seen mine Mike so you know the deal SS with thumbhole stock. And 250 T/C's or Hornaday, 777 100 grain and Remington 209 primers are the best less residue.
 
Sweetness...I got two books on kinda like tips and hunting tricks about deer and turkey hunting... I havent got time to read them yet, but scamed over them and they look really cool
 
Sounds like some good reading Y12 G. Books can take you places faster than experience or better stated they can inprove the experience. Make sure and let us know if you think they are a good read and worth recommending.

I did make the trade for the stainless and it was $20 less. I wasn't sure why but now I can't find locally silver rings and a base. Any online location you all know of and trust that would ship fast?
 
Roy, your setup really does look good with the contrast. I think I'll start looking for the blued rings. Nikon Monarch is already on the way.

I would go with the 777 and I personally have shot several TC loads and been happy with the Shockwaves and the Mag sabots, shoot the shockwaves now. Wasn't pleased with the Powerbelts at all, but I think to each his own on this one, try a few loads and see what is best.
 
Has anybody ever tried Precision Rifle's Dead Center Sabots? They have a similar build as the ShockWaves and SSt's but are lead. I bought them because I could not find the others. The ballistics chart looks pretty good on them. 110 gr. 777 with 175 yd zero 240 gr Dead Center -2.7 inches at 200yds 1595fsp and 1356 ft lb of energy.
 
I haven't tried them but I'v heard good thing's about them.If they shoot well let me know.
I'm alway's looking for improvement in my setup even though it's really on right now.
Did you find what you were looking for on midway's site?
 
My old Knight likes the Dead Centers and I had enough of them that the new Knight is shooting them too. They are accurate and do a number on the animals. I do plan to try some other bullets in the gun after season but I also won't be surprised if I am using the Dead Centers again next year.
 
Buckhunter, I was able purchase supplies locally to shoot but settled for variation of what I wanted, open sights for now(mount and ring not available), 30 gr triple 7 pellets(I wanted 50s), Winchester 209 primers(I wanted Remington clean burn 209s)and these 240 grain Dead Center sabots(I wanted shockwaves or SSTs).

I started with 120 gr of power and could not adjust the sights low enough. I dropped the powder to 90 gr and was able to get a 1 inch group at 50 yards with the open sights and a quality bench. I also found that with out running a patch between shots it became difficult ram to load all the way home(could this be the burn ring I have heard of caused by the to hot primers?). Wet patch, dry patch then the shot and the Dead Centers where great with out a real test for distance. I thought this load would be fine with my limited open sight range, what do you guys think of 90 gr of 777 with a 240 gr bullet.

I had a great day yesterday filling my last archery doe tag in the AM then sighting my Encore and sitting an uneventful PM stand with it for the first time. What a great sport we have all decided to be part of.
 
I tried 6 or 7 bullets in my TC including the Dead Centers, 240 gr I think (blue tips?). They shot well but no better than the SST's or Shockwaves which were available locally so thats what I stuck with. Also, I have the same problem as you when loading if I dont swab between shots.
I would think you would have no problem at 100 yds with 90 gr's of 777.
