pros hunting in IOWA

Getting paid for what you do, to the point you make a living off of it, makes you a "pro" by definition.

I have to agree with Kansan on this, I dont see how anyone can say that it takes no skill or talent to consistently kill big bucks. If all it took were money, only rich guys would kill big deer. I know plenty of average Joe's that succede regularly without $$, and some that throw thousands of dollars away and cant kill one big deer. I'd have to say some people just have more talent than others. Dedication has a lot to do with it as well.

Obviously you have to be in a good location to start with, that goes without saying. But that does not by any means always require money. It usually takes some talent to put yourself in the right place at the right time, then do everything right when the shot presents itself, and do it consistently. That is not the same as sitting where you are told in exchange for a couple grand.

As far as being a pro, I think it would be fun for a while, but I honestly think it would ruin it eventually. Might start being a "job"!

By the way Moose270, Milo Hansen was quoted in the Des Moines Register as saying he has made about $10K a year off his buck, or about $100,000. I was a little surprised he hadnt made more than that. I would say one big deer makes you a professional "exibitor", not a professional hunter. I dont see anything wrong with that though...

well said timber pig and Kansan, everyone knows that it takes skill to consistently kill bucks pro or not, IF a guy does pay the big bucks to go out and shoot one, just sit in and shoot thats fine, but somebody knew what they were doing, the guy that hung the stand scouted the area and glassed deer would be considered the pro to me, instead of the triggerman. A true big buck hunter, goes out puts in the time, scouts the area and knows where to hunt and usually gets a big one. anybody can get lucky and will once in awhile, but the guys that kill the big ones every year are in a class of their own that would be considered pros to me. Those camera guys definitely got the odds against them, two guys, two scent streams, cameras, getting it on tape, would make it alot harder. guys like the drury brothers and kiskies just blow my mind away at how they can kill all those monsters and always get them on tape, my hats off to them for sure

Getting paid to do what you love is the best thing going in my book. Call them what you want but most of those guys know what they're doing, whether they pay to be in the tree or not. As for guys like Milo, he is exactly as you said, an exhibitor. He doesn't claim to have any vast knowledge on deer hunting. He's a farmer who likes to deer hunt, and from what I've seen a very nice guy to boot. Many of these guys have spent their lives in the hunting "industry", not always in front of the camera. Show of hands, who wants to ask Jordon his secrets

. Is Onecam our resident pro? He holds down a regular job (last I knew), runs this site, and still manages to kill some of the best deer around. Now that's a real Pro.

I know several people who sell video of deer, turkey and other wildlife and no kills are on the tape, just video. I have seen tapes that is land around here but the kill was actually somewhere else and sometimes states away. I'm not saying thats bad,I'm saying they can also make money on the video as well as the kill.
