Get used to it, sad how some of the hunting industry has changed and people get mad at others succeeding. I get it though, one public land piece in Ohio I hunt gets pounded. The one day I counted 16 different trucks in the lots, all from different states. (Bow season, smallish chunk)
 
Little snow equals many shed hunters. I've been getting pics of trespassers shed hunting on my farm several times a week since shotgun season. I'll never understand why people will take sheds from land they can never hunt, but realize they can sell them for profit.

Where the heck are they coming from, do you border public land? Turn them in, or go after them when you see the pic (cell)?

I have also found that central IA is walked hard. I just try to stay positive and take every opportunity to go out and walk. You never know when you are going to find the big one. Could take 30 minutes or 8 hours, but the feeling of finding that monster makes it worth it.

The past couple years it has almost turned into hunting the shed hunter. By that I mean hunting around others or trying to time your search right.
 
How it went last year, walking all day and seeing all the boot prints and being able to find half of a giant buck. (Giant to me) made the ten hour drive worth it.

Thanks again to those of you that offered help and sent messages. Leaning towards checking six this trip. Looking at the amount land shimek has and couple surrounding pieces. Feel a little hopefully on the lower amount of NR bow tags that are given out. It will be about a ten hour drive, and check out American pickers shop on the way.
 
Pressure during hunting season and shed season is a crap shoot every year on public land. I'm amazed at how different it is from year to year. I'll find 6-7 sheds on some pieces and have multiple shooters, then the next season I'll get skunked and have zero shooters or vice versa. You can ask advice, but even good advice one year could turn into poor advice the next year because the pressure, weather and deer age structure can be so volatile.

I've also noticed that I'll find sheds from deer that didn't show up till February or March when the season was long over. They may pass through once or twice during the actual season, but sheds don't always correlate into good spots during the season necessarily.
Years back I ran into some guys from Wyoming who were shed hunting and scouting Iowa public land for the next season and they were amazed at the lack of rubs, lack of sheds and lack of good deer sign and were overall disappointed. I literally had two 180"+ deer on cam within a mile of there that season and picked up 3 matched sets across the river the week before.

So basically what I'm saying is shed hunting and scouting won't hurt anything, but it can be deceiving too. You sound ambitious so if you have 2 weeks during the rut to hunt you should get into some good deer. I'd take time off for the 7th through the 21st and you'll avoid a lot of the other hunting pressure. Good luck!

We are all grown adults here. The world isn’t rainbows and unicorns. Deer turn grown men into children. If you haven’t experience it yet, you haven’t been hunting long enough.

Im all for helping people out. Not so much non residents, that are brand new to the site, asking for free information and expecting people to accept them with open arms.

This site was ruined the day people started using it that felt like they were entitled to things because we have mutual things in common (hunting).

This is a hunting forum to share experiences, tactics, harvests, etc. I get it. If someone wants to share their hotspot, go for it. But remember. For every member Looking at your posts; there’s god knows how many lurkers on the back side soaking up all the free information your willing to spill.

Yea we are grown adults and the way you acted early turned you into the child you referenced. He asked about a general area not GPS coordinates to your stand locations. And whether you want to believe it or not the nonres hunters are helping keeping the laws what they are and some even turn to residents after experiencing the hunting here. I along with lots and lots of others are transplants here for the sole reason of hunting upper age class animals that you can't find in alot of other states......your response made you look like a complete jerk and now this post confirms it...if you don't have an answer to his question why post anything?

And by the way I have 24 years of hunting under my belt in states that far more difficult to find a 2.5 yr old...so I think I'm well versed in how the hunting world works!

You fall in the transplant category. Your opinion means nothing more than a can of beans laying in lake side casinos parking lot to me buddy. We can gladly round up a few clarke and Madison county residents and ask them what they think of this thread. I’m guessing they will all speak a tone much similar to mine.

Actually that brought up a good point, you saying that I'm assuming first week sees a lot more hunter action? ( I understand it's the rut and people use vacation for both weeks) In Ohio I notice, always the first week with more traffic.

Not really expecting anyone to welcome me with open arms. You can also just scroll passed the thread and not respond. Been studying the maps and figured what would it hurt to ask?
 
If you have not hunted the Midwest ie illinois, Iowa, you’ll find patterning deer and locating pinches/funnels to be easier due to its the only cover left after push off for crops. Hunters, like myself, from big block timber states like pa, Wisconsin, Michigan etc find that surprising and had my stands in the right places after a couple tweaks.
 
My thoughts on this thread are split. I dont fault the guy for asking and I dont fall far from Booners thoughts. It's an open forum where anyone with internet access can view it. Everyone is giving up places and that's probably someone's honey hole that they have been hunting since they were a kid. And maybe the people calling booner a phallus gave the OP advice in a PM, but Booner gave advice to the OP to get here as early as possible and walk alot because people are already looking.
And before I get called a d***, I gave the OP plenty of spots and advice in a PM. Like I said I dont fault him for asking and have no problem giving up some info, but reward the guy who has the balls to create an account and ask, not anyone who can lurk or run a google search.
