Any of you ever actually eat those puffball mushrooms that are found in the timber this time of year? I'm curious because I found one today and was considering eating the bugger.

Go ahead Muddy, if your well enuff to post afterwards tell us how it was. Short story- I used to work for the this small town fire department and we always ran on this one guy. he was an alcholic and always thought he was having a heart attack. anyway, he just so happned to live beside my uncle. one day he came over to my uncles house and asked if he was going to pick the mushrooms growing in his back yard, and if my uncle wasnt he would like to before my uncle mowed. So my uncle said have at it. well this drunk went on about how great the mushrooms were to eat and how he was gonna fry them up for dinner and my unlce could come over for dinner that night. well my uncle said later that day he saw david, opps hippa, out laying in the ditch throwing up all over the place. The next day we took him to the hospital for dehydration and feeling ill.
Go ahead Muddy- have at it.

Did you all know that the mushroom you see is actually the reproductive structure of a fungus? Yummy. Also, with the puffballs- all that is inside of those puffballs are sporophytes, which are intended to get dispersed by either wind or carried away, lets say by your foot to another location so another puffball will grow. I would'nt suggest eating them. I don't know how it would even be possible to "slice" a puffball into thin piecies????

Put reproductive structures in your mouth? Guess I'll pass. I made an exception for hog nuts. No really though- you have to get them when they are still solid, snow white inside, sliced thin and fried up (puffballs, not the reproductive structures) they have a different taste than morels. Makes you wonder why they call them "puffballs". I hope Fishbonker reads this and can clarify.

heres a link all about them. web page

Thanks Travis, my co-workers told me that you slice them and fry them into little "mushroom steaks" and that they taste awesome. Tomorrow night will be puffball night.

ENJOY! The best size are between six and eight inches in diameter. Peel off the outer skin and MAKE SURE the entire meat portion is a solid white. "They must be all-white inside. Any shade of yellow or purple makes them inedible or upsetting." Thus the reason some people end up taking the neighbor to the Hospital ER. My suggestion is the Puff-Ball steak cut 1/2 inch thick, dredge in egg batter, cracker crumbs, and fry in butter or olive oil (ala Morel Mushroom style) plain or on a bun like a tenderloin!

I have to find a puff-ball for school and im not having all that much luck. i found one and then i droped it the stupid thing broke open on me...lol

Still looking tho...

I will post a picture tomorrow of a puffball mushroom I found this weekend while setting up a trail cam.

This is the biggest puffball mushroom I have ever seen in my life!

It is about the size of a beach ball!

I have a spot where i deer hunt and there is like a ton of these things. I didn't know that you could eat them. Hey young12gague i sent you a pm if you are close to Clinton Iowa i can get you as many as you want.

My son and I were out squirrel hunting yesterday along the Skunk River a few miles south of Story City and the things were everywhere. I'll be we saw four dozen at least. Most were in the firm, all-white stage but some had started to dry out. Thought about picking a couple but wasn't sure how to fix them or at what stage you need to do it.

I too have seen several of these... I knew they were some kind of fungus, but had no idea they were edible. Most of the ones I have seen are around 10-12" in diameter....

Unfortunately I had to use my puffball mushroom to pay a dude for the gallon and a half of Boulevard unfiltered wheat suds he "gave" me.
