Quads and Deer?

Just a thank you to all who gave me advice about putting in a fence, my neighbor,,who decided to cattle raise, forced me to erect. Thanks also for the advice about run amuck dogs. The dog neighbors seem to have somewhat gotten the message. Have not seen a dog in quite awhile. My fence is in. Now,, another question. How much noise will deer get used to? Just my luck,,my cow neighbor's kid has gotten a racing 4 wheeler. He comes around a corner near my property and is about 100 yrds from some of my best bedding area. He is not out there every day. Couple times a week so far. Will deer get used to this noise? Just my luck,, these new neighbors couldn't have been elderly bird watchers.

In one of my spots, the loud quad seems to effect them only when it comes around. Pushes them back into the timber til dark.

thanks,,I think this developement is a bad one. I can only hope this kid gets a girl friend or some other passtime. He is drivng a pick up now, so hopefully he will be into other things, or leaving for college or something this fall. I can only pray!

They do kinda get used to it but it is aggravating, especially when you just get in your stand on a quiet evening and they "fire em up"

Just hope he doesn't start up a "mud bog" rally out there next...:D

during late muzzleloader at our property a hunter on the neighboring property drives his 4-wheeler right to the base of his tree about an hour before shooting time is over. all of the deer get scared back into the timber. then 15 minutes before shooting time is over he fires it up and drives away scaring all of the deer back into the timber again until it's too dark to shoot. eventually he just scares all the deer off of his field and they come out into our field, so it works out. also, we have another kid that rides his 4-wheeler around about 400 yards away from the field and the deer dont seem to mind.

It is MUCH BETTER than neighbors than over hunt their ground and are in there all the time on foot. Deer know 4 wheelers are not a threat over time- they can hear them coming and they realize they are not hunters over time in my opinion/experience.
I think it's MUCH BETTER to drive into a bedding area with a tractor, chainsaw or 4 wheeler than on foot sneaking in there.

Your 2 problems will be: if he does it WHILE you are hunting- your hunt is done in many cases. The other problem is if deer are constantly being spooked from that spot- they will bed another 100-200 yards away where they don't get spooked- not like they'll leave the area but if they have to leave day after day for a 4 wheeler - they will just go a few more hundred yards away. You will for sure notice them bedding in that spot less if they know they will get bumped. DON'T YOU LOVE NEIGHBORS?!?!?! :)

Makes me feel a little better knowing others have this problem. This kid is driving and growing up, so hopefully he will soon be into other things, and leaving home in the yrs to come. Unless he is a dud,,and stays with parents until age 35. I don't want to think those thoughts.

Look in the archives...

If you are interested, I am pretty sure there that is more on this subject to be found in the archives as I think I remember a post like this 2-3 years ago. In fact, I think I added to it some myself.

Generally, I agree with what others have written already. ATV traffic that is adjacent to your hunting area is normally not a big impact, ATV traffic through your hunting area or right next to it, is likely to be though.

My buddies farm I hunt has the same problem. The guy that bought the piece next door has turned it into an atv park with his kids and friends coming down there can be atleast a dozen running around the woods. They do not live there, just come down on the weekends. I have noticed the deer stay off in the timber about 50 yards from the bottom where one of the trails run. I feel sorry more for my friend that has to listen to the rap of a four stoke every weekend from now till it gets to cold for them to ride. I will have to put up with them next weekend when turkey hunting. Hope I get on one before they get into the woods.
