Question about shotgun hunting

Great idea splitg1! Let's remove party hunting during shotgun season, but make the shtogun season longer and overlap with bowhunting seasons. Fair is fair.

How many times have you heard from someone " Boy I'd like to shoot a big one sometime", and then they have a 1 to 2 year old in the back of their truck. How can you ever shoot a big one when your taking care of the little ones, but I guess the trophy is sometimes in the eye of the beholder.

Get rid of party hunting? Why? I grew up party hunting and looked forward to it every year, looking back on it, I had a blast. I'm not into it now but it's what started my addiction to deer and I'm sure many other kids.

Thanks for bringing this up guys, it just wouldn't be Christmas were it not for someone singing the traditional "Oh, holier than thou" carols on this board. I guess losers like me who enjoy the time spent with friends and family should just tuck our tails and leave deer hunting to the real experts.

Merry Christmas to everyone (elitists and shotgun scumbags like me inclusive, we all deserve a great holiday season)

you said it yourself when you said shotgun hunting is necessary for herd management, more specifically population control. Maybe if the gun season was longer you could outlaw party hunting, but the way it is now what do you think the harvest percentage would drop to with everyone hunting alone. You would also have to make driving deer illegal to have any effect. I guess its just the way most people were raised in Iowa when it comes to deer hunting and I doubt it will change. Its kind of like hunting with hounds in the south. I don't necessarily agree with it but who am I to pass judgement on their way of life? All I know is I love deer hunting bow or shotgun, but I sure as hell don't want my chances of smoking one with my truck to be any higher that they are.

Holy cow you guys want to put the shotgun season in rut?? You all opposed to party hunting want to lenghten the shotgun season. If you move the shotgun back any 9 out of 10 years you will have opening shotgun season in tail end of rut. That could be the stupidest idea I have ever heard of. Do you have any idea why Iowa has the biggest deer in the country?? Because the gun season isn't even close to rut. And then on top of it you want to eliminate party hunting. Do you know the hurting you would put on the big buck population if you are basically hunting rutting bucks with a shotgun. I know for a fact I could shoot a 160-170 inch deer every year with a shotgun if you moved the season back into the rut. Every deer that got within 125 of my treestand would die and you can't do that with a bow. So leave the seasons where they are. If the Iowa DNR is so dumb how have they managed to build the best deer herd in the nation?? If you want to hunt rutting deer with a firearm go hunt in Wisconsin and leave Iowa alone!!!

I read the same kinds of posts every year. "Lets bash the shotgun hunters"

It gets old.

I do virtually all my slug hunting from a tree stand....but that certainly doesn't make me better than party hunters.

On that note......I hope everyone has a great holiday season and can fill those late muzzle and bow tags! I can't wait to get out there....

I was being facetious about my comment regarding the elimination of party hunting. I'm a shotgun hunter that wanted to point out that bow and shotgun seasons have their pros and cons. Party hunting vs. a longer season during rut, etc.

Maybe if there were a limit to the number of people in the party.I did not go out with the party I usually hunt with this year because it has gotten to big in my opinion. So I talked my brother into going out for the first time in about 13 years and we did fine by ourselves.I have no problem with party hunting as long as the party is at a respectable number. But when you get 30+ peole in a group that is way too many. And can be very unsafe if you ask me.That is a lot of slugs flying around.JMO

I know you were RJ, no bowhunter wants to be out there when the lead is flying. Unfortunately, I would guess a poll would turn up about half this board that would sign on to eliminating party hunting; they're not kidding. It reminds me of the flyrod elitists who insist we all 'ban together' to insure PETA people don't take away our fishing, then start petition drives that limit certain areas to flyfishing only (perhaps lake assn' people who live in a state park and demand a 10hp limit as well).

Bow and late ML seasons provide plenty of solitude for anyone who wants it. Heck, most anyone who wants to shotgun hunt alone could find a place, likely on public property, where he wouldn't be disturbed. For the most part, these people probably mean well but don't realize that everyone doesn't need to be just like them for the world to be a better place. Deer hunting can be about family and friends, and that's allright. If someone is too hard-core to be annoyed by family, then they have the choice to hunt alone.

You know I was getting pretty sick of all the "I shot this ###" B&C Buck...bla, bla, bla" posts during bow and early muzzleloader season. I was thinking that for a site with so many "knowledgeable" people about deer that there are still so many "Trophy Only" hunters out there. I really hope that we shotgunners didn't thin the heard enough again this year and they only offer one anysex tag total next year and the rest antlerless. Then I hope I win the raffle for the one tag so I can shot a doe and use it. The slaugher, massacre, etc of the shotgun season is what is needed for heard control. the thought of making the season longer and not allowing party hunting would be a great way to get more bucks shot. I party hunt and I love it. We have simple rules, we know where everyone is standing, if you don't know then don't shoot, there are plenty of deer if we don't shoot this one. We harvested 19 deer this year, enough for one for each person and one for the landowners that allow us to hunt their land. It would be a great world if we could all take part of October, all of November and December, and part of January off and just deer hunt, but let's face it, for most of the party hunters of shotgun seasons this is the only time they have to get out and hunt. Does that make them any less of a hunter be cause maybe they choose to spend time with their families in the winter. In case it isn't obvious this "I sit in a tree for 3 weeks so I can shoot the biggest buck in the county because that is the right thing to do" mentality really pi**es me off. I really do hope that next year NO antlered tags are issued, then what will happen to this board, what will all the great white hunters talk about then. I would be nice to hear about this huge doe, she must have been a 180#... Well now that I have angered many of the "regulars" on this site I may as well go sight in my muzzleloader so I can go shoot 3 more big doe.

Everyone has there own opinion's on what deer hunting should be,if we did not have this site to argue out our difference's then I geuss we would just spend all our time hunting.

I find it funny that this debate comes up every year.

Deer hunting obviously is a very personal thing to many of us here.

I feel safe to say that what makes this site so great is the diversity of the membership.

I try to keep in mind that what draws everyone here is the common love for deer hunting regardless of hunting style.

It is hard to not think your way of hunting is the right way to hunt when that is how you learned and developed your hunting style.

I don't choose to party hunt, but I don't knock it. I sure had fun last night scoring a 168 10 point typical last night while having a few refreshments at a local pole building "hunting party"!
