question on Atrazine

My question is whether Atrazine alone on my 2nd year switchgrass in say April will be sufficient. Or am I better off to mix round-up with it again this year? Also, is Atrazine safe to use on young Cedars. I have about 600 from last spring and will be adding around 100 seedlings this year.

If you apply atrazine pre-emergence (before weeds/grasses emerge, it should do the trick alone. If you allow weeds to emerge (but before switchgrass emerges) then adding gly could be helpful, however you run the risk of killing some early emerging switch that would not be harmed by atrazine alone.

I would apply 4 quarts of atrazine alone in early to mid April if it was me. (the lable but if you have heavier loam or clay soil, more is better!!)

Most conifers are impervious to atrazine but red cedars are not specifically mentioned in the label. I have use simizine but not atrazine so perhaps a test would be best to be sure or perhaps someone will comment that has used it with no side effects.

Atrazine Label

Remember Atrazine is a Restriced Use Pesticide

*Sorry to tag onto this one....
If you use Atrazine AND round-up, I worry about Foxtail. Should I mix in some "Dual" or somethig too???
**I have some stands that are only CIR, Indian and BB stem mix- 2nd growing season this next summer. Same plan?

Foxtail is enemy #one that's for sure! Atrazine at high enough rates should control foxtail.

Dual Magnum is for...

Dual might not be a problem on second year established native grasses but I am not for certain. Osenbaugh recommends Bicep with is a combo of atrazine and Dual so I suspect it would work but....how about you be the guinea pig Skip?? /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Thanks guys, the atrazine I applied last year did great holding back the fox tail. In fact the fox tail did a good job of showing me exactly where I missed w/ the atrazine round-up combo. I plan to apply the atrazine April 1st and will probably skip the round up unless I see a lot of green up starting.Unless some one has more info on the red cedars I will probably end up using the bucket method again.

Simazine (princep 4L) is very safe and is a "zine" like atrazine so that will work if applied early.

I'll try atrazine on established cedars and see what happens this year... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

Max is three pounds/acre.

Remember, Atrazine use in Iowa is restricted to application rates of half the federal label (no more than 1.5 pound of active ingredient per acre) in Allamakee, Clayton, Dubuque, Floyd, Humbolt, Jackson and Winneshiek counties and some townships in Black Hawk, Bremer, Butler, Cero Gordo, Chickisaw, CLinton, Delaware, Fayette, Howard, Jones, Kossuth, Linn, Mitchell, Pocahontas, Worth and Wright counties.

There are also restrictions on how close it can be applied or even mixed to a well, pond, sink hole, cistern,or just about anything that has to do with ground water. 50 feet to mix and 100 feet to apply.

Actually I think it's only 2.5 now (techincally) /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

If you have someone apply it they most likely won't apply more then two quarts per acre. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
