It is no secret that Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin are top deer producing states for big bucks. I was searching the B&C records and I was suprised to see which state came in fourth place. We are talking the most B&C bucks within the last ten years (1995-2005).

Anyone care to guess which state it is? It may surprise you.

I would of thought that Kansas would of been up there. I am not surprised at all.
How many people from the state of Iowa didnt enter their B&C book buck in last 10 yrs is my question?

Here's the order for typicals in the last five years:

1. Wisconsin 205

2. Illinois 189

3. Kentucky 135

4. Iowa 130

5. Ohio 128

6. Saskatchewan 117

7. Missouri 91

8. Kansas 88

9. Indiana 77

10. Texas 70

11. Minnesota 64

It is my belief, although I cannot prove it, that more big bucks have been killed but not entered in Iowa than any other state. That's just my opinion.

If you look at B&C bucks compared to the total number of deer taken, Iowa ranks first.
 
I was told today that a hunter shot a huge typical last year with muzzleloader by Volga and he found it this year while mushroom hunting. It grossed 218 " TYPICAL! There are no big deer in Iowa!

MN not in the top ten...shocking. Not really. There are a few big boys here in MN, but it sure isn't at all like anywhere else in the midwest. Know why? The the damn gun season is the whole length of the rut!! Why would that be?

QDM also really hasn't caught on here from what I can see. Lots of monkeys still shooting the first buck they see.....and then they complain about not ever seeing a big mature buck.

About the same percentage as the ones that didn't enter from the other states.

It is my belief that there are a lot of B&C racks laying behind a barn or machine shed in southern Iowa than just about anywhere else. There is a lot of the "you can't eat antlers" mentality and although it has changed a lot in the last ten years, I believe there are hundreds that have gone unreported since modern day deer hunting began in the 1950's.

Minnesota used to produce good numbers of large bucks but has been going downhill in the last couple decades. There is a mentality that you aren't a real man unless you get your buck each year. For that reason the buck-doe ratio is ridiculously out of balance and mature bucks are very rare over most of the state. Add to that the gun season during the rut and you have a recipe for a state with the potential to produce good bucks that has been getting worse and worse. There is some movement towards changing it in some circles and some deer camps are beginning to change. There is more change in the southern part of the state, but the deer-camp mentality of get your buck at all costs, even if it is a forkhorn, has changed little in the north. It is being passed on to the younger generations every year. People say they are not a trophy hunter so they don't care, but if they see a doe and a yearling buck side by side they will shoot the buck every time. Yet if you ask them if they would like to shoot mature good buck they will all say yes. I beielve we are many years away from righting the ship in the northern two thirds of the state. IMHO.

If you're talking states then the last statement is true but if in general, not even close. In Saskatchewan there are maybe 40,000 deer a yr taken, that's only 120,000 over 3 yrs, that's a booner for every 1000 deer damn near and....like alot of places, I'd bet a very good percentage of them are not enttered. I know of at least 6 booner typicals that hang on walls in town here and aren't entered in the book.

Also, I will never be convinced Alberta does not have over 65 booner tpyicals in 3 years. You can put some stock in this data but not a tonne I wouldn't think.

Yes I am talking in terms of states. Even Iowa couldn't compare to Saskatchewan on a percentage basis. These numbers came right from the B&C records off their website (if you are willing to pay the $50 you can access them too). Sask and Alberta are in a different league I would say. Apples to oranges so to speak.

In 2005, There were 211,000 deer killed in Iowa, 255,000 in Minnesota, 463,000 in Wisconsin (down from 517,000 in 2004), and 33,000 in Saskatchewan.

I think your assertion that there are many Iowa deer that aren't been submitted for the record book is correct. I would also say that there is at least some correlation between those states that allow high power rifles and the number of big bucks taken. In Iowa, we can't reach out and "touch" them at 250-300 plus yds and it can be tough getting closer to the big old boys.
 
Very few of my buddies have entered their "trophies" and I don't either. We all know that Iowa has great bucks, and the word has been getting out over the past decade, but let's not tell more people than we have to.
