Quiz of the day #2

Those statistics are bogus. No dought dreamed up by the guys in SE Iowa. I can tell you for a fact there are more bigger, better bucks in SE Iowa than up here. In fact I've never seen a booner up here in 30 years of hunting.....

Small world Shadow! I thought of one more B&C that has not been entered. It is owned by the Winnebago County Conservation Board and it makes B&C as a typical and a non-typical. It is huge, and was shot back in the 1960's just north of Lake Mills. I was involved in getting it donated to the county conservation board and Dave Boland measured it in my office near Crystal Lake. I always encouraged them to enter it but apparently they never have. If you ever get a chance, go out to Thorpe Park and see it. It's an impressive buck.

I've hunted both areas and have found it a whole lot easier to get permission to hunt in Southern IA. You'd have to get real lucky to find a good chunk of ground in NE IA that isn't already hunted by 4 guys. If a guy gets a good chunk of ground to hunt, he does whatever he can to hang onto it. Hence the name "1lucky guy".

I know of tons of B&C bucks that have been shot all throughout the state, but never will be entered into the books. Some people simply do not want others to know where they are shot at, and I can't say that I blame them anymore

I think we should have a fundraiser so the people from the other 98 counties could donate and create a big fund for advertising the great deer hunting in Allamakee county.

Just e-mailed Robert at Thorpe Park and asked him why he never entered it. I had forgotten that the buck was finished off with a rifle. Apparently the guy who shot it with a bow was tracking it and kept busting it out of a bed so he went home and got a rifle and finished it that way. I had forgotten about that part of the story. He was never charged with anything and no one knew the story until his daughter (I think) related the story after the deer was donated to the park.

I hosted Walleye Wisdom, a TV show that ran on the Sportsman Channel for two years. We shot several of the episodes for the show on Clear Lake.

By the way, the question about the TV show jogged my memory and I just remembered a tidbit that might interest Shadowpeople. Tom Miranda and I drove right by your house back in '93 while we were shooting videos in that area.

Really...that's cool. That was probably about the time I was reading cornfed giants that I "borrowed" from the library.

I wrote that book in '93 too and it sold out really fast. I have been saying we should do a second edition.

Ahh. Now I know who you are. Didn't you run the walleye trail? My dad was in that a few years ago. The championship was on the mississippi.

What ever the stat's say may be true. But I think that the hunting community should follow the celeb's and head for the SE part of the state. THEY MAY KNOW SOMETHING YOU DON"T.

BOONER is right on......SE Iowa is like going to Florida.....you can shoot deer like "Keys" deer and lay on the lake beach all day long in November. That's what the pro's are after.....shoot a dink and spend time with the family on the beach!

A good camera angle and a lot of "What a Giant!" sells TV and Video everytime!

SE Iowa? Are you kidding me? I have never seen a big buck in SE Iowa. There are way too many hunters, and not enough deer
smile.gif
If you want to shoot a big one head up to NE Iowa, that's where the brutes are!

You guys are so full of bs. All the new studies are comparing deer to geese and ducks and we all know what they do in the fall.

I've hunted all over the state and have seen big deer everywhere! If you have a good food source and proper habitat with good deer management techniques you see big bucks.I'm in agreement with others on the site that many B&C bucks aren't recorded as to not bring alot of attention to certain areas.Hope everyone has a successful year and please shoot some does.
