Quiz Question #1 - Any takers????

I’ve surfed this site for years and get lots of enjoyment out of looking at pics, reading the stories, etc. As you see by the number of my posts though, I don’t do much on the side of contributing to the site. I thought I would try and work on that by posting something I hope some others may find entertaining.

I think we could all learn something with the age/score posts, but since we rarely ever hear a confirmed answer, we’re not able to learn as much as we could or figure out who really knows what they are talking about (if any of us do!!!). Sooooo I thought I would start a little ‘quiz’ to try and figure out just who the ‘experts’ really are!

We had a deer we captured on trail cams (an Iowa deer) over many years. We were able to tooth-age his jaw when he was finally harvested, or possibly was just found dead of old age???? The quiz will basically be answering questions on the deer’s age when the particular pic was taken. The pics will be in no particular age order, but I’ll state the approximate time of year it was taken as I know that can weigh heavily on the answer.

Since we’ve got many years worth of pics, I’ll break each question up into a separate post so there is no need to revisit the original thread to look for a new question. If you are interested in participating, please answer the question within the specific thread it was asked and list any rational you may have used for your answer. Also, the age guess must be specific (not something like ‘3.5 or 4.5’). You can also throw in a score guess if you want, but there will only be one ‘score’ question at the end as there was only one year (of course) where it could be truly verified.

By the way, if you know me or recognize this deer and realize you know me; please do not let the cat out of the bag with your responses! I’ll post a new question ever couple of days, so this could take a while (sorry). In the end, everyone can post how they faired.

This first pic is probably the most unfair or difficult of the bunch to make a guess at because he is in velvet and the angle is not full broadside. I hope this pic doesn’t scare off any of the regular guessers from participation, as I guess more will get it incorrect than correct.

This is a late July/Aug pic as his antlers are pretty much fully formed for the year.

Sorry for the long post!!! And I hope I didn’t mess up posting the pic.

Yikes! I guess so! :D

He looks kinda tough in that pic almost like "old" rather then "young" but I don't see the heavy shoulders or sagging belly that we typically see in a mature buck.

I'll go with 3 1/2 ;)

I never liked these "guess the age" things.Just because I have no clue mostly. But this might be fun beings you know what is correct.
I am going to be the 3rd different guess out of 3.My guess is 4 years and 3 months.

Small butt compared to chest and decent mass, my GUESS is 3 1/2. This one is very tough, he could easily be very old too. Great post, will be fun to see how good we are at guessing.

I will say hes a 2 year old based on physical attributes alone. If he is an old buck, he certainly doesnt look very healthy. 3 years ago I killed a 7 1/2 yr old buck (tooth aged) that was 297lbs field dressed. So unless this deer is like 11 yrs old, or the photo is really deceiving I am going to guess hes a young stud. This should be fun, cool post :way:

I'm going to say 4 1/2. I don't see the saggy belly but maybe its beasuse of the time of the year, they're usually pretty lean in the summer or perhaps the camera angle it just isn't noticeable. The brows look like they have some good length and I think it looks like the the right G-2 is splitting or has a kicker coming off of it on the inside.

I agree with this, I'll say the same.

I think this is an older buck off the fact of, that time of year, younger bucks should have more weight on them. You can see a little bit of rib cage on this deer, and he really doesn't have that young, race horse look to him, but more of an old, wore down look.

I could be way off, and I'll be the first to admit if I'm wrong, but I'm going to say 5 plus on this deer. After 5, personally I believe alot of deer age differently, so he could be 5 or he could be 9. Hard to tell.
