Rangefinder

Ok I'm getting kind of technical here but here is my question. When you are in the woods and trying to range something for example "in between trees" does your rangefinder go in between them or does it pick them up.

I have an old 440 and it is very good at getting small readings in the woods. On the other hand i borrowed WKP Todds nikon and I would have to shoot it three times before it would pick up the same hard reading as my old one. It was like it threw out a larger laser reading.

Does this make sense?

I am in the market for a new rangefinder and it is kind of hard to distinguish this in a store.

I love the leicas but if the nikons are going to perform the same then i will go w/ them.

Also does the new nikons have an instant reading?
