Reaching Out

No disrespect Cooter but really what are you getting at? Was he supposed to write that he shot 7 does? Is he not supposed to kill does just because he's writing an article about low deer #'s?

Thomas is in a position to reach a lot of people and hopefully they will listen and evaluate what needs to be done on the properties they hunt.

Fact of the matter is we can bicker on here or any other website about deer. When really the people that are the problem and don't care will never read any of it. They aren't like us. They don't follow hunting websites or any of the stuff going on in Des Moines.

Props to Thomas because hopefully they read their local newspaper. I do an outdoors segment on the radio out of Decorah every week. Today I talked about the season coming to an end and low deer #'s and urged everyone to step up and contact their representatives if they want to see change. IMO these types of things are what's needed. Educate the average hunter.

You are exactly right on educating the 'average' hunter. There are quite a few hunters out there who only think about deer during shotgun season, so the more voices that can be heard, the better. Thanks for getting the word out jjohnson! :way:

Great article Thomas!
There is some pockets of high deer #'s and probably always will be. Agreed - no blanket solution. What is nice is we do have deer tags PER COUNTY & it's time to get rid of a whole bunch in about 2/3rd's of our counties.
And no, deer #'s are not hurting on my farm BUT I have a ton of friends who are. Appreciate you taking the time with your article! That's the kind of thing, along with folks on here voicing, writing in, making others aware, etc- that will change things. WE can change things. The Governor needs to finally do the right thing and get outta bed with Farm Bureau. WE CAN CHANGE THINGS! *Late Antlerless- GONE!, Governor Tags- DONE!, reduce deer tags in decimated counties, etc.

Nice job and thanks for getting the word out. I believe though that Iowa hunters way outnumber Iowa farmers. There are only 92,000 farms in Iowa, and that number is decreasing annually. Almost as quickly as Iowa hunters.:(

You know, that's actually a very good point!!! Like when Farm Bureau pulls most the strings with Government BUT we as hunters probably outnumber them 10 to 1. What a great point that I didn't think of!!

I shot 13 deer off the same 1000 acres piece. So I can assure you there are hot spots through out the state. On the other hand I had friends and family that didn't shoot any deer this year in different spots in the state..... I sat one morning during late muzz and saw over 100 deer in a 4 hour time frame..... My brother on a different farm 100 miles away saw 3 deer in a weekend hunt.... He has learned now, that he is going to have to get off his butt and talk to other farmers about getting on there land to hunt because his hunting ground the numbers are way down. You will find that if you are willing to work for them there are deer around, but most so called hunters are to lazy to work at it a bit. All and all the deer numbers are down that's for sure. Nice write up THA

Great article Thomas. I think the vast majority of hunters are misinformed and only a small number are just now beginning to realize the problem. Hopefully your article will catch the attention of a few. Just some constructive critizism....I understand the point you are making with the pheasant numbers, but the the deer numbers are not related to what has caused the drop in pheasants, I'm sure you know. I hope you will write and being in the position you are hopefully help get the word out to more people.

Funny as I was thinking the same thing when I read that. Good point!!!

Ok, I fully realize that what caused the pheasant populations to disappear is not he same culprit in our deer herd. Its the pattern.

Just to clarify comparing Iowa's deer to Iowa's pheasants. It was simply to illustrate that if we knew 10-15 years ago what our pheasant population would be like it is today, don't you think most people would have tried to do something to prevent our current situation?

Its all about awareness and recognizing the pattern. Iowa's pheasants are in dire straits as we speak, a full recovery is unlikely, ever. But, our deer numbers are not decimated, yet. Applying what we have learned about pheasants could really help us take action NOW in preventing our deer herd from going down the drain.

Its really pretty simple.
