I would agree with this. ^^ I remember years ago we had planted some milo in CRP for pheasant hunting. It worked great...for awhile. Then it appeared to us be much less effective at holding birds and we didn't know why. One day we had pulled up near it and were preparing to hunt nearby and birds were flushing out of the milo strip way away from us and we were mystified that they could be that wild.Make x's only 20 to 30 ft long each leg !
Well...they weren't really. About that time two coyotes came into view and watching them for a few seconds it became apparent that they were hunting in tandem, perhaps there were others that we could not see too. I am not sure if they caught very many, but they certainly appeared to have caused the birds to about 90% vacate those strips.
In future years we think we solved it by making the strips more into blocks, much wider and not something that a predator could just streak down the side of and catch wind of game easily. In addition to shorter legs, I would make more of a "blob" shape at the center. Please keep in mind that I am only sharing an opinion here that is based on limited observations, so I am not 100% certain of this, but it does make sense to me if you consider how predators hunt, etc.
