Recommended bow for kid

I have been looking into getting a bow for my son who is 5. I have done some research on different bows but not sure which one is the best. I want a decent bow that is practical and he won't grow out of right away. Anyone have any suggestions?

At the age of 5 I think you should go with the Nerf. That is pretty young and the last thing you want to do is have him tear up his shoulder being that young and dealing with the problems the rest of his life. Just my opinion. GL

I have a Hoyt Magic for my 5 yr old that he has been shooting with no problem whatsoever for a year or so. It is set at 19 inch draw legth and on as light as I could get the poundage. Wisker bisket is a must too. He absolutely loves it. Goes on bow shoots with me and has a ball. The Genesis would be a good choice....there is no set legth or poundage. That is also the bow they shoot in the schools

Nerf? HA. I am not going to be having my son draw back something that is too big for him and definitely not going to jeopardize him getting an injury. Thanks for your opinion but I will respectfully be accepting others.

I guess I should have asked, 'Who has bought/used a youth bow and what would you recommend.'

blakesburg-no torn shoulders with you kid? HA. I appreciate you suggestions. These a few that I have been looking at. Did not know about the Diamond though.

I bought my son a Bear Oddessy 2 many years ago. I don't if its available anymore.

It is like the Hoyt Ruckus. The poundage goes up as the draw length goes up. It has been very nice cause it grows with your kid. Other manufactures may have the same setups now.

I would suggest using a fish scale or something similar to see what he can pull. You don't want to over bow your kid. If its not fun he may loose interest.

My soon-to-be 5 year old has been shooting his sister's old Diamond Nuclear Ice and is pulling 13 pounds. The Nuclear Ice has been discontinued, but replaced with the Atomic, which goes down to 6 pounds. He'll be shooting his Nuclear Ice for 2-3 more years until its time to upgrade, like we had to do with his older sister. The Infinity Edge may be just a tad too heavy/big for him, but its worth a look, too. Good luck!

At 5 the Atomic from Diamond/Bowtech is an ideal bow.

Lots of adjustment range and draw length and draw weight in a nice compact lightweight setup. Keep adjusting it as they grow instead of buying a cheap "one size fits all" plastic "Mart" bow. Pay a little more now and then be done for many years instead of buying one every year or dealing with one that doesn't fit.

Another option would be the Mathews Genesis. That's what we use in our youth leagues. Great bow for beginners, no let off and no draw length restrictions. They are similar to a recurve in the way that the more you pull back the weight increases. So, a nice bow that can "grow" with the child and last them quite a long time until they are ready for a hunting bow. Great for helping kids develop proper form without wearing them out with the repitition. They're smooth to shoot, even for adults. We use them in our shooting games at the league banquet.

My daughter is a small eight year old and she has a diamond atomic. Great kids bow that is very adjustable and light. She is wearing an eye patch at the moment because she she is having trouble shooting with both eyes open and can't close her left eye. 18.5" at 15 lbs and she is shooting 4" groops at 10-15 yards. She loves it. A releace helped a lot getting arrows to fly consisantly at this low draw weight. Nothing like shooting with your kids. My wife said the other night they saw a buck chasing a doe in the ditch and our daughter drew back her air bow on the buck. Priceless. good luck
