Regulation question

I have a friend who does not hunt but wants to go film my son on opening weekend of youth season. My question is this, can he legally be with us if he doesn't have a license? Or, does he have to at least purchase a non-resident general hunting license? I cant seem to find this information out on the Iowa dnr site.
Thanks!

The way I understand it, anyone participating in a hunt (calling, filming etc.) needs to have a license for that season...could be wrong though

This is right out of the rule book:

Helping Other Hunters
A resident hunter with a valid spring turkey
hunting license for any zone and season may assist
other hunters in any zone or season. A nonresident
may assist other hunters only in the zone and season
indicated on their license. The hunter doing the
assisting may not carry a shotgun or bow or shoot a
turkey unless he or she has a valid license and an
unfilled transportation tag for that zone and season.

I'd call the DNR officer for your county, since he's the one who's gonna write the ticket or not. There are a ton of gray areas in the regs, and you would hate to get burned! Good luck and let us know what you find out

I asked a DNR officer this question several years ago when I wanted to take my son with me deer hunting in muzzleloader season. She told me that as long as my son stayed right with me and also had orange on and did not actively pursue deer she would not have a problem with it. She also said it might depend on another DNR Officers opinion at the time he saw us. I had called her before I brought him along.

Have raised the question myself since my brother comes from out of state to hunt every year. I have been told that I can assist him in any season that he chooses as long as I have a valid hunting license and have bought a turkey permit for any season in the state.

Well I finally got an answer.
I called one DNR officer, he told me our friend could go along with us as long as he does not in any way assist with the hunt. Although he recommended I contact the officer in the area I am hunting. I finally got ahold of him today. At first he said absolutely not unless he purchases a tag. Unfortunately my friend is only going to be here for that weekend, which is youth season. Thankfully the officer thought about it and said go ahead as long as he does nothing to assist and he sits in the blind. I told him where and when we would be hunting in case he were to get a call or see us out and about.
I am glad I contacted him. Our friend is from British Columbia and has never seen or heard a turkey, he is really fired up about this.

That was the right thing to do and I am glad the CO used the gray area to use his grey matter...
