Results from Aging Deer with Science (Pic Heavy)

Here’s something to read and ponder.
The three month waiting has finally ended for the Cementum Annuli tooth testing results from Deerage.com. Thirteen samples were sent in, two were from 2016, eight from 2017. These ten were tested with Cementum Annuil science. The last three was a late minute favor and also were sent in and these were only jawbones so they were aged by tooth wear.

The first ten I actually worked on and spent many hours looking at them. The last three I physically never seen other then photos.
The results really have my mind spinning and I’m more confused on then ever on aging deer. This is science so I have to believe the results.
I personally classify deer as Jumbos, XL, Large, Mediums, and Small and these are from the measurements of the deer for size selection.

I have photos of them all to reference the antler size and the body size or structure.
Every photo is in black out mode and I was given permission to use all photos so here goes.
1. Gross 161, XL in size and aged at 6.5

9. Gross 160, XL in size, aged at 5.5

10. This buck had 20-22 inches broke and from the numerous TC photos Tom Sexton was able to repair the antlers with little to no guessing. Gross 197, Medium in size,aged at 5.5

The next three were only aged by the jawbone on tooth wear.

13. Gross 145, aged at 7.5. A youth hunter shot this buck and they had many TC pics of him and they thought he was a great up and comer.

The teeth are easy to take out I use a scalpel and cut to the jawbone between the teeth and use a pliers to get them out by pulling down on the teeth with the pliers. You want the roots of the tooth when they get tested.
All meat and tissue must be cleaned off and no salt or borax can be used cause that will mess up the testing.
There was a couple more deer that I begged them to get the deer tested but no such luck.

All info on this can be found on the web page so next season give it a try and find out the age of your deer by using science.

The only one that really makes me say wow is the last 7.5 year old. Other than that one, I don't see anything that looks way out of place. What would really be interesting to see in my opinion would be on the hoof photos of each of those deer so we could really see the body size and shape.
 
This is a fantastic thread!!!! Very interesting!!! Looking em over & over. One example that would fool me, #3 - early season buck looks older. Also- #8 looks older than 4.5. Wow. Very interesting!!! Aging deer on hoof never gonna be exact science. No doubt. Very cool & interesting!!!

7.5 - got teeth back on this management buck. Buddy held it for pic & laid next to it to show how big the body was right after it dropped. Dude is over 6’ & 230 lbs.
We guessed buck at 6-9 years old and guess we were fairly close. No history on the old bruiser. IMG_2139.JPGIMG_2138.JPG

Where were the teeth sent to have the testing done?
 
Ishi I sent mine to Wildlife Analytical Laboratories, the website is deerage.com.
First time I have ever sent teeth in to be aged so I just picked them off the internet.
 
My bro sent em in. I have to ask him but above sounds right. He sends ours in every year. When we can follow a deer from when we “think” he’s 2.5 (we usually r correct on that) - We almost almost always correct on age later when we smoke em (which is EASY if u can follow em & have age right when U first keep track obviously).
If deer that “show up” or no history - “most” the time we right except once they get 6+ & then it’s a range we guess on. Don’t care how long U been hunting, u never gonna get em all right & I get fooled every year. Oldest from this season was 10.5 & knew him for years!!! He was one of RARE examples where he LEGITIMATELY went down hill. Big time with drought.
Again- I look through ur above pics and for sure some surprises. Shooting old bucks is frigin hard!!! Props to those hunters!!!! Those r smart animals regardless of score!
 
#13 is my son's. I would of never guessed that deer to be that old. Like ishi said had a lot of pics all summer buy I'm fairly confident there wasn't any from previous years. I was wanting him to have a pass thinking he was a young deer that could put on some inches bassed off body and rack size. Guess I was wrong.

Mine #6 I would of put him right there at 5.5 or 6.5. I passed him the yr before and was thinking he was 3.5 or 4.5. I would say he put in 15 to 20 inches.

I'm sending every deer in from now on. Pretty fascinated by learning age structure. Wish I would of done it years ago. Have a few I'd really like to know.
