Runnin from bees!

As I come to the perfect spot to set my last setup for the season, I started hearing rumbling of bees. I look down to see dozens of bees start swarming out of their ground hive. I immediately drop the sticks at the Gorilla and head for the river! I get about 20 yards and BAM first sting in the butt cheek...Another 20 yards BAM 2nd in the neck and last but not least one in the elbow. As I'm swatting all around me hoping not to get stung again I look over while my cousin is laughing historically. I look over at him "Whatever man, this is not funny" He kept on chuckling and starts walking towards me. "HEY LOOK WHAT YOUR STANDING ON" I look down to see a super fresh scrape. Being the whitetail freak that I am all pain subsided for about a minute as I looked over the first scrape I have came across this year. We walk down about 50 yards and yup...another!

Is anyone else running into these on their properties already? I know there was another thread about this but I thought I would throw out that Bee story for you also...Interesting way to come upon the first scrape line of the year.

been seeing a few myself. usually the immature bucks are the ones that start scraping early, but its still hard not to get excited about the upcoming season. CANT WAIT.... huge bucks everywhere in NE iowa this year. Good luck with the stingers!:moon:

I had the same thing happen about 5 years ago. I walked in to my spot before sunrise and climbed what I thought was the perfect tree with my climber. Right about daybreak, I had one bee start buzzing around my head. I swatted it away and didn't think anything of it. About 2 seconds later, there was another one on my knee. Withing about 20 secounds I had what seemed like a thousands bees swarming all around my head and stinging the hell out of me. I didn't notice the giant bee hive that was hanging about 3' above my head. I hugged the tree and slid down from about 20' up. Scratched the hell out of my stomach and it wasn't exactly a soft landing. The bees continued to chase me across the bean field I was sitting over. I had to come back the next day in full coveralls, googles and face mask, just to get my stand down and avoid any additional stings.

That's what I was thinking. These look exactly like the common bee to me. It's the 2nd ground hive that I've came across with these bee look alike hornets.

Ok, I guess technically they are yellow jackets, but that really doesn't matter when they are attacking. This time of year they are looking to go underground to hibernate and are also more aggressive.

In regards to finding a fresh scrape, I've had cams hanging over a couple for two weeks now, with very little activity. I think the next card pull will be different, though.

Came across my first scrape last night on a field edge. Saw a rub too.

Last year I was brushhogging a trail to a stand and ran over a nest of them bastards. Let me just say it sucked. 20oz of gas and a match took care of them.

Not to be a downer to all the anxious out there, but has anyone noticed the weather pattern has changed. From lots of cold fronts to Stagnation and a blocking pattern. It is forecast to hold. Something that did not happen all summer. Strange,,but this leads to dry warm weather. I remeber when me and another guy had a hunt trip to N Dakota Oct 16th,,was 96' yet! Cold was slow in coming last season,,at least where I was. I see it the same this season. I have made alot of scrapes on my trails. anyone have this help? Not many appear on my land any year. Only a couple in the same spots.
