Rusted!

Went catfishing lastnight w/ my 2 boys. My oldest found this trap, what's left of it anyways. I want to take the crusted mud off but am afraid it will fall apart even more. How long does it take for steel to get this rusted? I've never seen anything this rusty.

I don't know. It looks like a name tag on the ring. If you can read the name, call the owner and ask him.

Those tags were discontinued in the late 1950's or early 1960's I believe. That is definitely an old trap... looks like a #1 longspring. Not much left of it.

I started trapping in 1973, and at that time it had been 10-15 years since they used those numbered tags.

It was found about 10' from the waters edge in some sand. This part of the river has been reworked after the 1993 flood. It could have washed down from Plymouth county being that the countyline isn't very far away. But it was so close to the bridge that might be a Woodbury county trap also. Wonder if they kept records & if Officer Sisco could give me some info about this trap. I might contact her.

That tag was for the 55-56 season. There should be more numbers on there identifying whose trap it was. I am not sure but I think each trapper was given a number when they bought the trapping license and that number corresponded with the number on their trap tags.
