Rye...now??

I seeded right after Labor Day and missed the last rain. Ground was almost too wet to plant but never got rain after that. Plots are doing fine but had a couple spots where either the deer ate it to dirt or I messed something up. I hand seeded a couple bags of wheat on top of the ground yesterday- we’ll see.

I have a couple more bags in the shed, I might even hit them again if there is good rain in the forecast.

Catch 22.
With our 10 day warmer then normal (by far), I could easily still put in rye.
Problem is, the ground is SO DRY, a 1/2" or perhaps even an inch won't do much unless it's a prolonged wet event.
Sure, it will Germ but...., ain't nothing for the roots to retrieve down deeper.
Rye is easy to get going but it still needs moisture down deeper.
Yep I did mine a few weeks ago and it's a dirt wasteland.

Look closely...I have germination. :) Looks very good.

Nice, I just put some in a few days ago to salvage a couple spots and was wondering about the red sprouts…

Never would imagine in 10,000 years but...
I'm thinking of broadcasting rye tomorrow.
3 day forecast is showing bout 3/4 inch of rain and the 10 day shows highs in the high 40s / mid 50s.

Got 2 bushels stored and as stupid as it sounds, I may spread it in the morning in a 1/2 acre brassica plot that is already eatend up?

I filled the drill up last week. (The drill that in my mind was tucked into storage for the year!!!). Right before all those rains. Rye, peas, ww, triticale & I even through some Jerry oats in. Oats will pry only be good until gets real cold. But drilled all the spots that looked a bit sparse or shriveled from no rain for a month. My GUESS is, still get 3-4”+ tall. Sure can’t hurt!!! It’s been like 5-6 days now so I’ll go sit out there & bet I can see the rows coming up now.

I just followed a bean harvest with ww. I wish I would have thrown down some peas and an an annual clover too. There were a LOT of soybeans the combine missed, maybe they will germinate

I did a test, a couple weeks ago I bought some seed with the intention of frost seeding next February, and for chits and giggles last Tues/Wed, I threw some of each into our home garden planters. Some red clover, alfalfa, chickory and arrowleaf clover sowed each into it's own pot....it's all up today.... this Friday I'm hoping to throw the last couple bags of rye I have out as well.....at the farm

Looks great & let us know how the deer & turkeys respond. Yesterday I watched a couple deer and one turkey eating the rye I just planted.

Deer are in it already. No turks close enough, not likely to be any in this area.

Looks good! Seemed like my winter wheat took a long time to come up but it’s up now. Planted on 11/03 or 04 cant remember.

Chalk another one up to "lessons learned". I don't have a drill, so I broadcast the rye over a failed fall plot at the same time as others in this thread drilled. We had plenty of rain, but my results are not the same. I think with leaving the seed above ground this late in the year it was too cool for it to take off. Some of it is still trying but I think it's too late. If I had to do it over, I think I'd just lightly scratch it in a little bit with a disc.
It didn't work but it was a cheap lesson with no real downside. You guys' plots look great!

The rye I lightly disced in a couple weeks looks great. The rye I broadcast a week ago looks like yours. The seed is just sitting on top of the soil. I tried to disc it in at the time but the ground was gummy and my disc is too light evidently. I lightly rototilled in those areas yesterday & will see what happens now…

My wheat is finally up. Just a tinge of green in the field. They are talking snow at the end of the week.

The seed I broadcasted came up before the seed I put in with seeder. Who knows....
