I was going men pool league tonight and about 500 yards down the road the dnr had guy( on there 40's in cuffs). and there he was the buck i have been watching all fall, my pet, my wife wont let me hunt them. i guess she thinks it is to easy for me i can almost feed them out of my hand. anyways the shot him this day jan 19 2004. he only had one side left i am guessing about 85 to 90 points typical. yes i saying he is mid 170's to 180's. worst part of all he was 3.5, i know this for a fact cause he has black legs and i remember watching him as a fawn. i lost all four games of pool tonight, worst day of my year. those sob's are lucky i didnt see them, i will be shooting at poachers from now on that is no lie. they will lose a beat up old 30-30 and there hunting rights for three years and it will cost em 500 a piece. imagine another year on this buck, potential world record i kid you not. the worst part is i should have took him legally with the bow this fall, but i wanted to see one more year on him. my frustration, why shoot a buck with only one SIDE!!!! i am gonna take off my hanes and go find a shower rod to hang myself from.

That's the only way we can take care of these problems is in our own hands. Those sob's should get some shot in there @$$ for the first time and loss of weapon and lisince threw out the US for life if they do it again, poach em'....I just don't have room in my world for irrogance....

moose,

Here are a few points to consider:

1. You're right...these guys are scum of the earth.

2. Shooting at them would put you in a category even lower.

3. Typical fine for this would be significantly higher than $500...but still not high enough.

4. I'm sure it was a great deer, but a 180" buck isn't likely to be 320"+ in one more year.

5. Be happy they're caught and move on.

Just my 2 cents worth.

That does suck big time, man if that thing had 90 inches a side, just antler alone would put him at 180 assuming they matched, and then if its that big had to be at least 20 inch spread, putting him around 200!!! only 13 more inches, he may have been a good potential world record, do you have any pics of him, when he was in your backyard? im sure we would love to see him!!! poaching sure does suck though, quite awhile back when my dad was getting big into hunting, a guy shot a 240 nontypical off of our farm, he got caught though, and i cant say i hate the guy for he quit hunting and now i can hunt all his land

I have said this before, grab your spotlight, your hunting journal, six pack of soda and get out and get out and do some night time scouting! Call the DNR, call your neighbors let them know you are going to be scouting and also patrolling the area looking for poachers. Sure it's a pain in the a$$ and almost impossible for a few but I have been doing this for years and have not seen any poachers or big bodied deer with their heads cut off in my area for quite some time. Best thing of all is 90% of my notes on travel patterns come from night time scouting.
My $0.02
Moose270, that just plain sucks!

Hunt on All4s

You have serious issues Moose. I think this is the second or third time you have made reference to shooting someone in this forum. Don't get me wrong, I am against poaching 100% but am not willing to shoot someone over a deer. Follow All4s advice......try and get them nailed for it rather than griping about it and remove these folks from our hunting grounds.

I agree shredder....maybe some anger management classes?????Really it would suck but you will think it sucks more sitting in prison WISHING you could be hunting after shooting someone....

I agree, take it easy mooseman. As we speak, there's probably a real lonely guy sittin down in Ft. Madison just waiting for your pretty face to come strolling on in, and venison is not the kinda meat he craves...

Moose,

First off that sucks! Also, I'm confused, with deer running around your back yard of that caliber - why the heck are you trying so hard to come to Iowa to hunt? Also, shooting at people will not solve anything.

One more question Moose....If he was like a pet and your wife wouldn't let you shoot him then how were you going to shoot him next year????

i need anger management, there is no doubt against that, the wife can be purswaded. i got some pics i just got figure out how to get them from the. camera to the computer. this is the only exceptional buck that i worthy of killing up here. he was huge but i just love the terrain you guys have down there, i also believe hunting over bait is not a challenge and you have to up here to see any deer and i mean any. i have 4 four acres and most of them are visible from the road, suppose i could throw up a stand above the tire swing lol. anyways sorry i was just venting. in review it just makes me sick and referring to shooting some one is just a bunch of bull honky, only way i could do it is if i felt threaten, a burglar or something. i am just a big wimp.

moose270. i'm with the above. you have roughly 70 post/replies here and it seems like have of them your ticked off about something. although i don't blame you one bit for being mad about this incident, you need to cool it on this site. this is a pretty happy bunch here most of the time, lets try to keep it that way.

I don't think the shots were aimed at you because you are different, but because you are angry...with violent solutions to your problems. You may want to look back over your posts and compare them to the rest. You may be suprised how radical you sound.

We don't mind different. Unstable is a little harder to agree with. Stay safe and post away....

and maybe try a nice decaf.

Down with poachers...only thing worse is a politician.

There is no deer worth anyone getting upset about.

In reality, if poachers all quite, we would have a heck of a time keeping the deer under control.

We need to let the system work as it was set up, our role is to support it.

If you notice quite often when we get upset, it usually ends up being somenting like "I want" or "Me".

This hunting stuff is supposed to be fun. Not a life threatning serious business.

Who in this world owes us a big buck?

So many of us big buck fanatics seem to want things given to them.

Grow your own, own your hunting preserve, I need to kill a big one to be somebody. Give me the newest toys to make it happen.

What ever happend to the hunt being challenging and the harvest being icing on the cake.

Some of the stuff I read on these boards makes me concerned about the people I share the woods with.

I hope it is just PC frustration. I would hate to think we have fallen to such a level that big antlers override our good values.

Be safe and try to have fun.

I'm a little concerned as to why when someone expresses there opinion or tells there story alot of you guys jump on there back. For example moose270 someone is doing research that he has 70 angryposts and he needs to cool it. get off his back If you don't like what he has to say read it and move on. I don't think your in any position to tell him what he can say and can't. That is rediculous, it's like a pack of dogs. Another example is a ScottI.C. shoots a beautiful deer and is kind enough to share it with all of you and after a few posts out come the dogs and you're raggin him about why he doesn't have orange on and that it is illegal. I don't get it!

I had thought all of that had passed as it was talked about and taken care of then someone wants to dig it up again???I don't get that!

hey y'all! new member here. just wanted to say hello and love the sight. and to moose270 i heard you say something about that deer being the only one worth shooting up there, here's a little story. poaching is huge here in southeastern ohio and 2 years in a row bucks have been poached off of the property next to mine, 4 the in 2001 and 3 in 2002. my dad and i thought our season were over in 2001 we had no luck in shotgun season and never saw over 20 deer combined between each other but on dec. 27 2001, the first day of muzzleloading my dad took his biggest deer ever, it was an 8 point scoring 172". basically the same story in 2002 and on dec.9 2002 i took my biggest deer to date which was an 8 pointer scoring 146". both deer had never been seen before so just because you might not see big deer doesn't mean they are out there. so if you want to let off some steam when hunting season rolls around next year find that poached bucks brother kill it, and be proud. :bc

Hey splitG3,
Welcome to the site and post some of those big eight point pictures you were talking about. We love big bucks in here, even Ohio ones.
