The first one or two numbers will be the magnification. Usually shown with a dash such as 3-9 or I would suspect 4-14 in the case of your example. If there are two numbers separated by a dash, then the scope has adjustable magnification in that range. If there is one number before an X, then the scope is a set magnification equal to that number. the number after the X is the size (in Millimeters) of the objective lens. The objective lens is the lens at the front side of the gun. The larger the objective lens, the more light it will draw in.
