Been trying to find next yrs buck. Not sure he'll be around next yr anyways even if someone doesn't shoot him b/c winter is going to remove more than it's share. Way more snow than normal and colder than normal temps.

SaskGuy,

Nice pics, always enjoy your posts!

I talk to Riley O. in Grayson and Garry Donald in Saskatoon quite a bit and I am amazed by the brutal Canadian winters. Last winter had to be the worst and then this one coming just has to be devastating for a shrinking herd.

Have you ever experienced anything like it in your years? I mean has the herd been cut in half to be cut in half again? We have no idea what true wild and wilderness looks like.

Tony, last winter was the worst I have seen in my years where I reside. The snow cover was immense and it was simply real long. This winter so far, is shaping up to be worse. We have nore snow than we had a month from now last year. The deer are already struggling. I trudged through knee high snow yesterday to retrieve this card and was amazed to see lots of deer at high noon pawing at alfalfa way out in the middle of nowhere. I appears as though they are no longer making the trek back to the big timber as the energy resrves are already depleting. Instead they are staying in a tree row between alfalfa fields. Usually that won't happen until January.

On Sunday I was down at a friend's place to hang some more cameras. I placed one in his bale yard as he is already battling them in his stacks and having them work away at an old wooden grainery. Again, that type of behaviour is more than a month ahead of itself. Most years I selfishly hope that rifle hunters don't deplete next yrs stock. This yr, I am not even thinking about it as it'll be a drop in the bucket compared to what winter is sure to weed out again.

Wow, so sorry to hear that, really I am, the older I get the more I find myself compelled by this animal. They have to be one of the most adaptive creatures on the planet but they can only take so much. I pray for a break from the harsh cold and snow but I understand it's Gods will. As hunters I think we have to step back at times and even "pull up " and let him walk. Peace, and thanks for sharing.

On a side note Tony, all these harvest photos I am looking at on this site appear to have been taken on a different planet from the one I reside on. LOL I cannot fathom hunting in a ball cap and without giant mitts on my hands right now.

Haha, no kidding!
This year has been cooler though, the hot Autumn days we have had in the past have stayed away for the most part. Tomorrow we should get down into the high single digits. I live up on a high flat that is mostly agricultural and it's windy on a calm day but the wind has been nuts this year.
I think I will call up and visit with Gary and see if he took some good photos this fall. I truly appreciate his hard work at getting high quality whitetail and mulie shots. He will send me a good one and I will post on my site. Take care!
