I shot this jake at 10 a.m. on the first day of season 2. I had been seeing and working on some mature birds and had 3 coming right in, but a group of 4 deer came over the hill when they were just 50 yards away. The deer walked right at the turkeys, and pestered them until they changed direction and went back into the timber. Later, I had two jakes come over the hill at me, and after thinking about my available hunting time during 2nd season, I decided one of them would be just fine. Young bird or not, I was plenty excited, and now I can hardly wait to get out with CamoKid. We will have this bird in the smoker Sunday afternoon.
For the last few years, my turkey grounds have been marginal. This new farm is awesome, and I will be holding out for a longbeard. CamoKid will be with me in the 4th season, and he has not gotten a turkey yet. Any legal bird that gets in front of his gun is in trouble. Having too much fun . . .
