Seeding experts needed

Today my buddy and I went and talked to all the land owners to "freshen up" our permission for this years hunting. Couldn't have gone better!!! Not only were they glad to see us, but one of them sent us to his neighbor and we now have permission on all of his ground. The reason for this post is we made the comment to the land owner about how good it would be to have a food plot way back in this area. He lit up like a light and said go get your seeds and meet me down there next Saturday morning. He says "you bring the donuts and I'll bring the tractor, disc, four wheeler, seeder and harrow." Needless to say I'm going to take him up on it. We were thinking about turnips. Obviously its dry. I'm 30 minutes NE of Des Moines. Where is a seed dealer that would have seeds on hand, and what are the "tricks" to making this take off properly. Or.... are turnips what we should be looking at. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I would suggest planting winter rye. Getting late in the game to be planting turnips. I have had good luck in the past planting rye on ground that was really dry and a little late to plant anything else. Or just use dbltrees cereal grain recipe if you really want to get serious.

Oats, Rye, and clover would be a good start. Get it worked up well and get it planted. The clover will come back in the spring and the deer will get used to feeding there, making it easier to establish a good kill plot in the future. If you kill a buck off of it this year it's a bonus, but I would be thinking long term. Keep the clover mowed next summer and frost seed it this winter/spring then decide what you want to plant there next year. Good luck. How big of a plot are thinking? Lots of variables to consider, such as deer #s, soil type, surrounding crops, etc.

The easy answer is Welterseed.com. Fast delivery. If you plant rye add clover and maintain it next season. Take care of this owner. Sounds like you are golden and this guy is a peach!

The plot will be right at an acre. There is newly seeded alfalfa 1//4 mile east of me and corn 400yds to the west. For whatever reason the deer never use that corn field. They will travel north to another corn field instead. There is a pretty solid number of resident deer on this property. When the rut kicks in they travel from across the road {which doesn't get hunted} and come over to check all the does. I'd like to have them in the habit of coming to this plot so they bring the bucks with. Also there is a creek right beside the plot so hopefully the water table is still high enough for decent moisture.

So I ordered from Welter Seeds like you guys suggested on sunday morning at 9:30 am. The seed was at my house 7:30 am yesterday. What a great company. The land owner has already prepped the site so I'm all set. Thanks again.
