SF516 Get New Committee Assignment

SF 516

I am very dismayed, but not altogether surprised, that the Iowa House has decided to give SF516 another chance. HF 516 severely limits the state’s ability to acquire and manage public spaces including habitat, parks, and other recreational spaces. It passed the Senate and is now in the House bouncing from committee to committee. The Environmental Protection Committee would not even touch it — flat-out cancelling two meetings. So now they will try one more time with the State Government Committee, where they must feel there is a better chance of ramming this terrible bill through.

A new subcommittee has been named, but there is no date scheduled for meeting. Best guess at this time is Monday or Tuesday of next week:

The subcommittee members are:
Rep. Harris austin.harris@legis.iowa.gov
Rep. Baeth austin.baeth@legis.iowa.gov
Rep. Wulf derek.wulf@legis.iowa.gov

Please visit our action alert page and email your representative and then, if you’re willing, email separately the three legislators above with your concerns about the bill. It will take all our efforts to defeat this. Our Call to Action Alert will be up this weekend
A quick look at who supports and opposes this bill will show you why SF516 is now given a third chance. Check out which organizations have declared on the bill.

Farm Bureau has, up to this point been the driving force and the only support for SF516. Now they have been joined by the Corn Growers and Cattlemen. This is purely an initiative by Big Ag aimed at curtailing the acquisition of more public recreation areas in the state and influence management on existing areas. In a time when Iowans are clamoring for more public use areas, this Legislature is snubbing its nose at the vast majority this state’s population. If you love public wildlife areas and your hunting on them, you need to continue to put the pressure on.
This bill is unpopular with Iowans. Let’s demonstrate that together by flooding the House with messages opposing this misguided and dangerous bill.
