SHOOT ANYTHING GUN HUNTERS

My family owns and "tries" to manage our small tract of land for some quality deer, after this weekend I don't think that is possible. First off I don't hate shotgun hunters, my brother and his son love their annual outting very much, but we have one neighbor that owns about 40 acres that butt up to our property that invites 5 or 6 guys that will shoot anything and everything that moves. And you would think if it takes 15 shots to kill a button buck a guy would practice just a little before season. I know...they have the right to hunt deer just as we do...it's really discouraging when they shoot mostly 1 1/2 year bucks and yearlings and then trespass and drag deer right by our cabin!!! Sorry for venting guys, I guess I expect all hunters to care as much as the rest of us on this site do.

hear that. On a different note my wife and I went for a walk this evening. We were almost home when I happen to look in a yard and see a trailer with a 4 wheeler on it. It had 2 - 1 1/2 bucks tied on it to the four wheeler. Nobody was in the yard or in site. Thought that really gave us a good image. Who knows who that guys neighbor was or who could drive by. The thought also ran through my mind about all the scavengers running around that might find themselves an easy meal. Plus the fact that they will probably take them to the local locker the next day to be processed in a big batch with everybody else's hopefully better taken care of meat.

Sorry, but some people....

I didnt see it but heard about a guy up here had a big buck hanging from the bucket on his tractor out in front of his shop right on a heavily traveled blacktop. Showing off I guess. Thats just plain stupid.

I hear you Iowabruce. I was hunting up by Zearing on some public land and was talking to a guy and their group was the same way he said they already to a tiny 4pt and another small 8pt and my reply was thank you for the quality deer management. He wasnt to happy. He was also one of those guys who has permission to hunt on everyones land that has a big deer on it

we hunt alot of private land and the fence lines well u never kno where the deer are gona go and were basically meat hunters- except for me i want a rack but not a small rack a respectable rack. well we never had shots at lil bucks this year even but i shot a doe sunday morning - made sure it was a doe and well a new shotgun hunter for this year shot bambi - no joke we had to get spot remover out on this one- haha no spots tho but thats what we told him. it happend to be a lil buttun buck

but it was his first deer so no one really said nething kinda sucks that it never even had a chance to grow a rack but thast hunting and life. we did manage to take 2 booners a 170 inch 9 pointer very nice deer also this guys first deer-buck. and a 180-190 inch 13 pointer- that was shot off public land. believe it or not. truley a MONSTER buck. but for big deer and no small deer usually a first timer from our group will shoot small bucks which makes me mad i'll only shoot does or monster bucks but it was alot harder this year with the snow but its still hunting and its still fun stuff. i dont really have nepics of the doe so i cant post but once i get my pics back of the group pics i'll be sure to post them. i think that if you pay the $26 bucks, than you are allowed to shoot whatever deer you want to. if you are trying to manage your own land, that is great, but your neighbor is allowed to kill what he wants on his land. now if they are trespassing on your land, then by all means, turn him in, or atleast kick his ass. (although i would suggest turning him in)
if a guy wants to hang a deer in his yard, then who cares? my family has been haging out deer under the evergreen trees in my dad's yard for 30 years, and have never heard any negative remarks. that is the easiest place to get to, and they usually hang until the following weekend, when we process our own

I don't know what the big deal is about shooting anything buck or doe...the adrenaline starts rushing and you either see horns or you don't...simple as that...and our theory is if it's brown it goes down...I mean people bitch about the overpopulation of deer in Iowa and then when hunting season comes around the groups that aren't afraid to throw there tags on deer that really arent trophies are frowned on...I think it's more the people that are head hunters that I have a problem with...everyone know's to keep the population down you have to kill the does too, they're the ones having the babies...there's always going to be a buck out there breeding regardless...but for people to just shoot bucks year after year is dumb...I'm not saying not to shoot the big ones but don't be afraid to take does either...use your head!!

I guess the "brown is down" mentality will always be around. I respect the animals I hunt, and if other hunters are legal in their pursuit of deer I guess I can't complain.....just don't expect me to stand up and cheer everytime a button buck get's waxed, by a one weekend a year "hunter"

i'll tell u guys what i hunt by st. lucas and i have seen just about every kind of hunting there is. first off i'm from minnesota and our dnr actually comes around. people shoot off the roads, people shoot right after getting out of their cars. you can't tell me they loaded their guns that damn fast! next people run down deer and cut them off with their cars. it is a joke at times. there are so many deer and they gotta hunt so bad. a group close by walks out the land we hunt and if they wound a deer they just say i gotta blood trail, the other guy says "ahh screw it probably ran a mile away! that is so terrible what an ethical thing to do. i don't believe in its brown its down either even if that population is so high. shoot the does not the damn fawns. and yes you can tell the difference. if you get an adrenaline rush from fawns you are just out for the blood. people use dogs to walk their woods and kick the deer out. that aint illegal or nothing! a 12 pointer was stolen from a crew. the guy left it to get his tag and it was the biggest deer he has ever taken. what pride can someone take in stealing a deer? all i have to say is that there is so much poaching going on by this area it is sick.

Unfortunately I think the shotgun season brings out a lot of the "bad apples" when it comes to deer hunting. There are plenty of law-biding shotgun hunters in the state of Iowa but since it's probably the easiest way to harvest a deer, it also brings out a lot of morons who don't bother to read the regulations. Case and point.....I had to remind two shotgun hunters that decided to walk right on to my property that they were tresspassing. They then countered with, "We are following a blood trail". To which I replied, "Then leave your guns in your truck." The funny part is.....they came barrelling down this gravel road before bailing out of their truck to walk in to my timber. There was no evidence of a blood trail where they started walking in and there was lots of snow up in North Central Iowa where this occurred. I also find it difficult to believe they were following a blood trail going 50 mph down a gravel road. In any event they didn't have my permission prior to walking on to private property WITH their firearms. It's VERY aggravating to see this as a landowner.....

Big bucks are fascinating creatures and I love them as much as the next person on this board. But some people don’t care about antler size. They only want meat. Yes, does do taste better, but young bucks taste better than old ones. Maybe the only good shot that presented itself was at a small buck.

I hunt for the food to nourish my body and the experience of nature to nourish my soul. I prefer a big buck, but would rather take a smaller buck at the end of the season than go without venison. How many small bucks have been killed over the years? And yet Iowa doesn’t seem to have a shortage of trophy bucks now does it…

I do have a lot of respect for the serious trophy hunters here, for the hard work they put into it. I know they have to have a lot of knowledge and it is only through knowledge that you can develop a real love, understanding and respect for these magnificent creatures.

As long as it was done in a legal and ethical manner and the harvest is utilized, it’s all hunting. We need to project a positive image to the non-hunting public at all times. I know there are a lot of bad apples out there. My beef is people unloading their guns at running deer. All day long…not good.

Ya can't hit'em if ya don't shoot at'em!

Well at least it's a buck!

12 guys and 10 of'em got bucks!

We could have killed a semi load of does!

I hear and see the same thing every season. Change comes slow here in farm country.

GUN HUNTERS...if your looking for meat then shoot a doe they are better to eat anyway. if your looking for a buck, then shoot a 3 1/2 year old buck or older. if that is too hard to recongnize then maybe brushing up on what big bucks really look like would'nt hurt. it is hard but thats part of the game. you can hunt alot of years and harvest 120-130 class bucks but in a few (2 or 3) short years those bucks will be 140-160 class bucks. a big difference in such a short time.
Remember- shoot older does or BIG bucks and nothing in between. let him go so he can grow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know that there are idiot gun hunters out there that shoot at anything, take bad shots, etc, I've spoken to more than a few. But I am a gun hunter also and I hunt just as ethicly as my fellow bow or muzzleloader hunters. Our group practices QDM on two of our properties and we do have a "brown is down" mentality at times. "Brown is down" for us is we shooting does, not just waiting for the big one. And we did harvest more does than bucks; by choice. Just because you have a shotgun in your hand doesn't mean that you don't hunt or act with ethics. Those idiots that we all run into during shotgun season are not idiots because they hunt the 1st few weeks in December...there idiots at that time because they are idiots 365 days a year whether there holding a gun, bow, hammer, or a pencil. My 2 cents.

I think Waukon1 brings up a good point. I know a number of shotgun hunters who are as serious or more serious about qdm than most bowhunters. They also are very careful about safety and making one shot kills. We need to be careful to not paint with too broad a brush..

I’m all for quality deer management and I love nothing better than to go toe to toe with a huge buck during bow season but not everyone cares about that. A lot of people would have shot the forkhorn that was 20 yards from me on opening morning this shotgun season. I didn’t but if it was the last day I would have. Let me state first and foremost: This is my food. I don’t like to buy domestic meat. Organically raised meat is very expensive and besides, this is the most natural, healthiest free range meat there is.

My point is this, all slob hunting aside, being a trophy hunter does not make you morally superior to someone who hunts only for meat. Like I said, mature bucks are amazing animals, but there can be so much pressure to kill one that the hunter forgets what is really important – the hunt. The solitude or the time spent with family and friends. The gifts that are provided to us from the Earth and our Creator and the closeness we can feel to both when we are in the woods. That’s why I’m there all spring and fall.

There are people who don’t, for whatever reason, spend the three + months hunting like most of us here do. Unless it’s illegal or unethical I don’t presume the right to tell them what deer to shoot. Just like I don’t want anyone to tell me what vehicle I should drive, what books I should read or what kinds of gun (if any) I can have.

Peace.

If the adrenaline gets in the way of making a good target determination or a well placed shot- I'm wondering about safety. A legal deer is a legal deer but hunting ethic is a personal choice.
